Hybrid: This position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time to perform most effectively. The employee's role enables them to work at a GM facility or off-site as frequently as needed or desired.

Site Reliability Engineer desired to join a global support team for General Motors IT. General Motors IT has established Technology Development/Innovation Centers globally and is focused on creating an exciting environment that motivates and challenges professionals technically. We are actively seeking Site Reliability Engineers to join the team and provide a range of services to our global organization.

In this exciting and visible role, you will be responsible and accountable for the design, implementation, configuration, and successful transition to Operations of technologies in the assigned domain. This will include following standard installation recommendations, configuring the technologies to match the needs of the function being served, and delivering to project schedules.

For this GM position, we expect you to have advanced mastery to function independently for day to day tasks. The role requires working with several technical teams to rationalize throughput and sizing demand to define efficient and effective solutions that bring together technologies from all areas. In this position you will often be an assigned technical resource to numerous project teams simultaneously.

You will be required to work with numerous teams and balance competing requests, while meeting project deadlines. Additional responsibilities might include monitoring, performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and implementing corrective actions in support of continuing operations of the assigned domain.

The role is accountable to work with project teams to develop robust system designs that meet the criteria for functionality, stability, performance and resiliency to deliver effective IT solutions for our business.

  • Duties include working on numerous project teams, often as the sole system management engineer, to develop requirements, obtain information from other support groups, execute project tasks, deliver systems, and provide support through the lifecycle of the project.
  • Responsibilities include ensuring IT standards are met, production readiness processes are followed, and a quality system product is delivered and turned over to Production Support personnel.
  • The role may also be called upon for escalation of real-time incidents. Responsibilities include advising junior staff in appropriate steps to diagnose, repair or remediate issues with systems in the assigned.
  • Holds themselves and others accountable for demonstrating GMs values and cultural behaviors. Models GM behaviors and creates a winning culture. Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • The role requires expert knowledge of technologies in the assigned domain, robust knowledge of general IT concepts. Thorough knowledge of system design principles to include reliability, availability, scalability, Knowledge of peripheral domains is necessary.
  • Extensive knowledge of how to leverage available resources to solve problems and deliver solutions.
  • Operates, monitors & administrates IT equipment & environments. This includes monitoring, performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and implementing corrective actions in support of continuing operations of the Windows Platform.
  • While this role focuses on the Windows Operating Systems, a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected as well as the desire to learn, utilize the tools, processes and develop the organizational agility needed to maintain and provide maximum availability and reliability of our product for our customers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities

Candidates require good communication skills and the ability to demonstrate comfort, interest and aptitude for learning and manipulating technology platforms. This position will manage multiple priorities effectively, work independently and thoroughly assess written content. Ideal candidates will display knowledge in ITIL and service orientation, have a strong aptitude in problem-solving and be able to work virtually within global teams while innovating and completing projects and tasks under tight deadlines. Work will largely be guided through service requests and coordination with the release management team.
  • Proficiency in service-level changes to systems and troubleshooting components
  • Perform configuration, service, incident, and problem management functions
  • Perform change, release, security, patch, and certificate management activities
  • Engineer and deploy enhancements to production and non-production systems
  • Work with teams to manage the agreed upon SLA's
  • Work with teams to improve the reporting & operational policies and procedures
  • Participate in off-duty or on-call work as required in a rotation.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Familiar with a variety of IT Support concepts, practices, and procedures. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Performs a variety of complicated tasks with a specific focus on the Windows Platform and the various support intricacies one is required to be well founded in to perform at the highest level.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other related discipline or equivalent work experience
  • 5+ years of experiences in operational understanding of the Windows Server Operating Systems (2003, 2008, 2008R2, 2012, 2016, 2019) with experience supporting varying configurations including the ability to document procedures, runbooks, and environments.
  • Strong background in working to maintain the highest degree of security implementations as well as proactive mitigation of vulnerabilities
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills in a high-pressure environment working with application, network, security, and development teams
  • 5+ years of experience with Active Directory, DNS, Chef, NAS / SAN, Certificates is an asset
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with customers and support teams to identify and drive SLAs/SLOs, Resiliency, and Performance.
  • Ability to analyze situations, speak up respectfully, and share innovative ideas
  • Strong work ethic in a mission-critical 24x7x365 diverse environment with multiple vendor/customer relationships
