Upward Bound Math & Science CoordinatorDescription/Job Summary

Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) is a grant program created and funded by the U.S. Department of Education. This pre-college program was developed to strengthen the math and science skills of underserved, first-generation high-school students and to encourage them to pursue postsecondary degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Baltimore City Community College is currently seeking an energetic, organized, and collaborative individual to serve as Coordinator of the TRIO Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS Program. Under direct supervision of the UBMS Director, the Coordinator's responsibilities include identifying and selecting participants, assessing individual participant needs, and providing services to eligible students in target Baltimore City Public Schools. The Coordinator will assist the Director with ongoing academic advising sessions, college readiness workshops, BCCC collaborations, parent workshops, STEM community engagement, and the documentation and analysis of quantitative and qualitative student data to drive high-impact practices. The Coordinator will assist with supervision of staff and students and provide services under regulatory and legislative guidelines to ensure all UBMS program objectives are met.

Responsibilities/Duties

Job Description: The Upward Bound Math and Science Program Coordinator facilitates the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the various components of the Upward Bound Math and Science program. The coordinator is responsible for:

  • Coordinating with target high schools in Baltimore City to continually recruit and retain eligible program participants each year.
  • Facilitating the identification, recruitment, and selection of project participants.
  • Planning, coordinating, and implementing the program's services, including Saturday Academy sessions during the academic year and 6-week summer program for each cohort.
  • These services include academic instruction and tutoring, college preparation, career exploration, financial literacy education, cultural enrichment, social-emotional wellness,
  • community service, assistance completing college admissions and financial aid applications, and on-campus residential programs.
  • Maintaining documentation of services in electronic database and participant files.
  • Assisting in training instructors, tutors, summer residential staff, and student volunteers.
  • Developing and nurturing partnerships with faculty and staff of UBMS and Baltimore City Public Schools to enhance the program's services.
  • Engaging with other UBMS staff members to provide formative assessment and continuous improvement of program delivery.
  • Assisting Program Director with preparation and submission of evaluations and reports, including the Department of Education Annual Performance Report.
  • Assist in recruiting instructors to teach program participants in the following content areas - biology, biotechnology, chemistry, robotics, health science, technology, math,
  • and physics.
  • Attend professional development and training
  • Providing office administrative support for the program.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Program Director
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in mathematics, science or a related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • Previous experience working with first generation, low income and minority students, faculty, and personnel in a university setting.
  • Excellent computer skills, the ability to effectively review math and science curriculum, demonstrated ability to organize and conduct intensive science enrichment activities,
  • ability to plan laboratory experiences, and the ability to evaluate and monitor instructional guides and report progress
  • Demonstrated knowledge of student development theory and best practices for student engagement and retention in pre-college programming.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of academic, career, and advising principles and practices
  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience working with Blumen, Banner, or similar student database system.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proven ability to establish rapport and build strong working relationships with students, parents, school administrators, community and college partners.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A master's degree in higher education, education, psychology, or related field of study from a regionally accredited institution of higher education.
  • Experience coordinating tutorial and other academic support services in higher education setting.
  • Previous experience working with Federal TRIO Grant programs. Experience with Upward Bound Math and Science Programs preferred.
