Engineer, Technical Services

Job Summary

The position develops and maintains standardized processes and procedures as they relate to operation of packaging testing lab. The lab is a full-scale performance testing facility for UN rated packaging (steel, fiber and poly drums; composite IBCs). The testing activities are performed per DOT 49 CFR. The position maintains currency with appropriate regulations and assists the R&D and regulatory compliance effort within Mauser Packaging Solutions (MPS).

Essential Functions

Develops and maintains Packaging Testing Lab technical specifications and SOPs

Develops standardized training material on test methods and processes

Assists laboratory technicians with new test method set up and validation

Expertise in SolidWorks creating parts, assemblies, and drawings

Proactively manages calibration program for Packaging Testing Lab, including replacement of worn-out equipment.

Collaborates with manufacturing sites on topics concerning UN/DOT testing, standardized procedure development, customer and quality issues

Supports and assists management in product improvement research and specific customer product development projects.

Participates in the North American Product development activities. Inclusive of product testing, procurement authorization preparation and comprehensive presentation to management

Participates in packaging component selection and approval of components based on samples

Assists technical manager with product specifications, technical literature, introduction of new products from MPS and outside vendors, and product training to sales.

Adheres to company policies and mandates.

Communicates safety, environmental and quality issues to management

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • BS in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering; Material Science or combination of education and experience
  • 0-5 yrs Experience in plastics processing, and program management of products made from plastic materials.
  • Knowledge of polymeric material testing and failure analysis. Experience with instrumental analysis of polymers (FTIR, tensile)
  • Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills to resolve technical issues.
  • Use and understanding of precision measuring instruments and gauges, specifications, charts and diagrams. Able to accurately read test methods, measuring devices, product specifications and test procedures
  • Project oriented requiring minimal supervision, proactive and adaptable. Must be able to act with a sense of urgency
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and presentation skills.
  • Expertise with SolidWorks 3D CAD design software
  • Strong computer skills in standard MS Office products such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Project.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to use drum and IBC handling equipment for both full and empty packagings.

Visual acuity to process information.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to sit at a desk for long periods of time; stand; use hand to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.

The employee is required to walk and stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, sit, climb or balance.

Specific vision abilities include ability to distinguish color shades, close vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
