Position Summary:

The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist position plays an active role in the removal and disposal of hazardous, universal and biohazardous waste for multiple college campuses. The candidate will assist with/ perform building inspections and preventative maintenance to ensure fire, life safety regulatory requirements are met. The candidate will have knowledge of hazardous waste management practices and techniques and adhere to local, state, and federal rules and regulations on hazardous materials management.

The work schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings and weekends and on-call rotation to respond to emergency calls. Frequent local travel is required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs preventative maintenance for a comprehensive program to dispose to appropriate facilities of hazardous chemical waste materials
  • Conducts laboratory and facilities inspections to assist with regulatory compliance and procedures
  • Promotes worker health and safety
  • Collects, labels, segregates, transports, and accumulates hazardous waste for disposal at various college locations
  • Collects and labels hazardous and non-hazardous waste materials including recycling operations
  • Collects and prepares infectious/biohazardous waste for disposal
  • Maintains records/inventory of transported materials in compliance with regulation and procedures
  • Respond to work orders for services, preventative maintenance, and repairs in the area of assignment/expertise
  • Respond to customer issues and emergency calls, including being subject to off hours callbacks and serving on a rotating on-call roster
  • Communicate with outside vendors and complete purchases and services, to include quote requests and approving invoices following College policy and procedures
  • Inspect facilities for fire/life protection equipment and systems (eye wash stations and AEDs, fire extinguishers and ensure periodic servicing
  • Follow applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Perform heavy labor, such as moving heavy equipment associated with the area of responsibility; use safe work practices and procedures, to include proper lifting, pushing, and carrying methods, and the proper use of hand and power equipment, tools, and supplies
  • Assist with inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure adequate stock and functionality are maintained
  • Perform data entry input on a computerized maintenance management system. Use computers and applicable software, including facilities and maintenance software, word processing, databases, email, and calendaring
  • Prepare and maintain a variety of reports and records to provide effective customer service; Communicate clearly both orally and in writing sufficient to receive and convey instructions to perform the duties of the job
  • Perform a full range of skilled environmental, health and safety maintenance of systems applicable to the area and provide general service
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor

Job Requirements:
  • High School diploma or General Equivalency Degree (GED) and
  • Two or more years of skilled-level experience in related duties and demonstrated knowledge, skills, or abilities associated with the assignment and
  • Completion of an approved occupational health and safety training; RCRA and HAZWOPER (may be completed within three months of employment) and
  • Valid Arizona Driver's License and demonstration of an acceptable record
or
  • Candidates who possess similar minimum objective qualifications are encouraged to apply and should describe in detail the work experience and education you regard as establishing the equivalency
Preferred:
  • DOT, HAZWOPER, RCRA certifications and universal waste knowledge
Additional Information:
  • Successful candidate must meet minimum medical testing requirements, as determined in a physical examination that includes a lift test, respiratory examination
The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal rules and regulations on hazardous materials management
  • Knowledge of chemical compatibilities and hazard classes
  • Skilled handling hazardous materials and emergency response equipment
  • Recognize non-compliant workplace/occupational safety and environmental issues
  • Safe work procedures to include safe driving habits and clean driving record
  • Applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations
  • Use of computers and applicable software applications to include Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, and Power Point) and work order software (FAMIS) to facilitate the preparation and maintenance of a variety of reports and records, including data entry and inventories
  • Principles of superior customer service, dependability, and civility to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with individuals at all levels
  • Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing, and demonstrate interpersonal skills with co-workers, supervisors, the College community, and the general public
  • Meet deadlines and priorities while performing multiple tasks
  • Maintain appropriate confidentiality in job functions and all matters
Physical Requirements:
  • Positions in this class typically require climbing, crawling, crouching, lifting, reaching, balancing, stooping, grasping, manual dexterity, kneeling, standing for prolonged periods, walking, pushing, pulling, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions
  • Heavy Work: Exerting force up to 50 pounds occasionally, 20 pounds frequently, and 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
  • Incumbents may be working in areas with moving mechanical parts, electrified equipment, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, low lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
