The Department of Neurology at The University of Chicago Medical Center has a great history and tradition, having made significant contributions to neurological training, clinical care, and the basic understanding of neurological disease.

Job Summary

The job provides technical support activities related to scientific research projects. Ensures compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates. Assists in drafting presentations on research findings.

Responsibilities

  • Following protocols, designs, sets-up and conducts basic experiments.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity and/or accuracy.
  • Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting and entering data.
  • Manipulates, interprets and/or presents results.
  • Prepares charts and graphs for presentations and publications.
  • Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
  • May complete portions of grant applications, manuscripts and publications.
  • Tracks and summarizes lab supply expenses.
  • Verifies accuracy of invoices.
  • Orders and/or maintains inventory of lab supplies.
  • Maintains technical and administrative support for a research project.
  • Analyzes and maintains data and/or specimens. Conducts literature reviews. Assists with preparation of reports, manuscripts and other documents.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree.

Experience:
  • Experience with at least one neuroscience research methods used with human research participants, including behavioral testing, electroencephalography (EEG), functional MRI (fMRI), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), or similar methods.
  • Experience interacting with individuals with neurological or psychiatric illnesses in a clinical or research setting.
  • Two years of research experience or relevant experience.

Preferred Competencies
  • Entry level skills in at least one human neuroscience research method.
  • Entry level understanding of at least one computer programming language (C, Python, etc.).
  • Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written). Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong data management skills and attention to detail.
  • Read and understand complex documents (e.g., clinical trials).
  • Handle competing demands with diplomacy and enthusiasm.
  • Absorb large amounts of information quickly.
  • Adaptability to changing working situations and work assignments.
