Position Title: Refugee Education Program Instructor

Department: Adult Basic Education for College and Career

Rate of Pay: C41/4 - $24.67

Position Summary:

Instructors are responsible for the development and implementation of the curriculum in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with the integration of college and career readiness skills. Instructors are responsible for preparing students for the successful completion of their classes and transition to college and career.

This position is offered in one of the three modalities of face-to-face, hybrid, and/or online instruction once approved by the college at one of the two Adult Learning Centers. All Refugee Education Program (REP) Instructors engage in ongoing, job-embedded, and collaborative professional learning, which includes coaching in addition to other required training. REP students come to the program seeking English skills, digital literacy skills, and preparation for the Naturalization process and college and career. Classes may be multi-level groups of up to 30 students from various countries. Although some students might be experiencing the process of formal education for the first time, REP Instructors are expected to integrate College and Career Readiness (CCR) content such as time management, technology, civics, and soft skills to support all students in achieving their short and long-term goals. All instruction is expected to be standards-based, student-centered, and contextualized to ensure the classes are rigorous, pertinent, and meaningful for students.

About Refugee Education Program: 

Pima Community College Refugee Education Program (REP) provides English Language Training (ELT) to refugees, asylees, and SIVs who have been in the U.S. less than five years, and have been resettled in Pima County. All classes are contextualized to English for New Americans and key industries in Pima County. REP receives referrals from two Refugee Resettlement Agencies (RRAs) in Pima county; the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest (LSS). The top nationalities served on FFY 2021 were Congolese, Eritrean, Sudanese, Afghan, Syrian, Burundian, Central African Republic, and Somalian.

This is a grant-funded position and continuation of employment is contingent upon renewed funding. Ideal candidates will be a part of a pool of instructors. Ideal candidates will be considered for part-time positions at variable hours and locations, as available

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement high-quality curriculum and instruction for adult learners with refugee backgrounds that is flexible, student-centered, standards-based, rigorous, and contextualized
  • Integrate CCR skills, computer literacy, and civics
  • Deliver instruction to students using a variety of methods; adjust teaching styles to meet the needs of a diverse student population using adult learning theory/principles and content knowledge in math, writing, reading, and/or ESL
  • Prepare instructional materials, lesson plans, and classroom presentations in support of students achieving educational goals
  • Administer standardized and formative assessments; assess student needs and goals; determine student placement in the program; evaluate student skills; and, assess student progress for program continuation or completion
  • Facilitate the process of critical thinking and reflection
  • Complete accurate and timely data collection and reporting
  • Provide counsel regarding student discipline issues to create positive outcomes
  • Conduct orientation meetings for students
  • Facilitate goal-setting activities with students to set and monitor goal achievement
  • Facilitate student persistence with individualized support
  • Provide referrals for students to internal departments and external agencies and organizations to assist students in meeting their needs
  • Develop, research, review, and/or revise curriculum; select textbooks, equipment, and materials including evaluation of alternative delivery methods of instruction
  • May serve as a resource for instructional staff throughout the program in specialized areas of instruction
  • Represent Refugee Education Program and the College at conferences, state committees, and/or various types of workgroups
  • Establish and maintain a classroom environment conducive to student learning
  • Engage in collaborative professional learning and continuing education to facilitate student achievement
  • Write communications such as student contracts, letters of reference, and nomination letters for honor societies and scholarships
  • Adjust learning options for individuals with special needs, physical, and/or psychological differences
  • Set up/break down classrooms or other physical activities related specifically to the subject being taught
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required
Job Requirements: 
  • Bachelor's degree and
  • Two years of related experience instructing English as an Additional Language to adults with a refugee background 
  • Arizona Department of Education certification or the ability to obtain the certification within sixty days of the date of hire
or
  • Candidates who possess similar minimum objective qualifications should describe in detail the education and work experience you regard as establishing the equivalency
Preferred:
  • Master's degree in Education or
  • Three or more years of experience teaching Literacy Education and Second Language Learning for Adults

  • Work in a collaborative environment
  • Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with students, co-workers, supervisors, and the general public
  • Prepare a variety of reports
  • Evaluate student progress 
  • Strategies to incorporate current issues as a method of instruction
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Experience in teaching undereducated, at-risk and multicultural adult with refugee background
Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: talking, hearing, seeing, repetitive motions and fine finger movements - using the fingers to manipulate/handle objects such as typing, sorting papers, activating buttons, or sorting/separating small parts.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Moving about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long periods or moving from one work site to another.
