Description of Services:

Completion of an independent assessment of energy and waste streams at service recipient's facility. UNL will identify the intern and match to the service recipient with feedback based upon the scope of the project.

  • Energy & Waste Reduction Assessment²
¹The P3 program is operated by the University of Nebraska Extension, College of Engineering, and Nebraska MEP with external funding provided by the Nebraska Department of Environment & Energy (NDEE).

²NDEE & UNL P3 financial participation in the sponsorship of the Intern(s) reduces Services Recipient's required contribution to the project.

Objective:

Decrease plant operational costs and environmental footprint by investigating means to decrease overall plant site's solid waste generation, energy demand, and water demand.

Materials and Methods:

This summer internship session will be managed by the College of Engineering's P3 (Partners in Pollution Prevention) program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and will be performed in coordination with the services of the Nebraska MEP. The ability of the parties to complete the project within the allotted timeframe is dependent upon the timeliness of the Client completing their assigned tasks and providing requested information.

As such, the overall project manager will be the P3 Intern under the supervision of Dr. Bruce Dvorak, UNL College of Engineering and Matthew Jorgensen, Nebraska MEP, or other assigned UNL designee. Nebraska MEP will coordinate with the College of Engineering to facilitate the completion of the project.

The objective will be met by undertaking the following projected tasks in tandem with designated client manufacturing personnel as time unfolds during the course of the summer:

Investigate and catalog means to reduce plant site's overall carbon footprint by replace existing energy streams with alternative ones (e.g., Diesel to Bio-Diesel). Investigate and catalog means to reduce overall plant site energy use and or increase unit efficiencies, especially as it relates to specialized production equipment and related ancillary utility equipment systems (e.g., bio-dome, packaging, refrigeration, steam-hot water, compressed air et al). Investigate and catalog means of reducing plant site water use and wastewater generation, particularly as it relates to production and sanitation best practices at various process steps. Investigate and catalog site solid waste generation and its potential for elimination, reduction, reuse, or recycle, all the while quantifying and tracing its lifecycle from inlet, as a plant process stream or needed consumable, to final disposal. Make recommendations on above investigations based on cataloged data and analysis, action plan(s), estimate ROI, payback period, and projected impacts toward achieving sustainability goals.

Deliverables:

Exact tangible elements will be file document(s) detailing in a report the above said investigated objective items.
