Salary/Position Classification

Purpose of Position

This is a part-time, non-benefited position (up to 5 positions will be filled). UND students and alumni are strongly preferred for this position.


The NATURE (Nurturing American Tribal Undergraduate Research and Education) University Summer Camp Mentor will work, as a team, with 10-20 Tribal College and University (TCU) students attending the NATURE University Summer Camp. This camp introduces participants to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines and career opportunities while simultaneously being introduced to campus and city life. The mentors will assist students as they tour lab spaces, work with faculty, and prepare for research presentations in the STEM area of their choice.


TCU Students will be coming from the following Tribal Colleges/areas: Cankdeska Cikana Community College, Nueta Hidatsa Sahnish College, Sitting Bull College, and Turtle Mountain Community College.


Mentors will report to the ND EPSCoR Tribal Partnerships Manager as well as Associate Coordinators of NATURE University Summer Camp.


Locations will include: University of North Dakota, North Dakota State University, Grand Forks and Fargo surrounding areas.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assist TCU students
    • Acclimate to college campus and urban setting.
    • Work in lab spaces and engage with faculty.
    • Engage in social activities during off-hours.
  • Assist in administering NATURE University Summer Camp activities.
    • Help with setup and implementation of Closing Ceremony on June 14.
    • Work closely with supervisors to ensure that Camp activities are implemented.
  • Other Duties as assigned
    • One or more Camp mentors will be asked to stay in the dorm each night with camp participants as needed.
    • Work closely with other mentors.
    • Undergo training.
  • Customer Service
    • At all times, model customer service to students, staff, faculty and guests Work Safety
    • As covered in training, help to create and provide a safe working environment for students, staff, faculty, guests and fellow mentors
Required Competencies
  • Must be available for Summer Camp June 3-14, 2024.
  • Must be in good standing with institution (if currently affiliated with UND).
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with other mentors.
  • Demonstrated strong time management skills.
Minimum Requirements
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of Tribal Colleges and Universities and/or indigenous communities
  • STEM field experience
