Microbiology Laboratory Technician

As a Microbiology Technician/Technologist II, you will be part of a local team in the processing and analyzing of veterinary patient samples at our clinical diagnostic laboratories. This position works with the Microbiology department which includes Pathologists, Technicians and Laboratory Assistants. This position will ensure the site's Microbiology tasks are executed to internal standard operating procedures and external standards. Under the supervision of and in cooperation with the Laboratory Supervisor, this position will become a technical expert, performing testing as well as maintenance of equipment.

Responsibilities and Duties
(include, but not limited to)

  • Perform routine tests in clinical laboratories diagnosis using standard techniques and equipment; perform related duties in laboratory to include storing and labeling specimens and using manual and automatic equipment to prepare specimens and perform analytical tests.
  • Perform standard laboratory analyses accurately according to published procedures and turnaround times.
  • Performs, reads, and interprets stains, including Gram, acid fast, partial acid fast, and modified acid fast.
  • Reads and interprets manual identification systems (NFT, API) and enters manual Kirby-Bauer sensitivities.
  • Reads, enters, edits, and releases urine and routine cultures (isolates and identifies pathogens using established protocol and sterile technique) using established protocol.
  • Recognizes discrepancies in susceptibilities and performs secondary confirmation testing as needed.
  • Enters, edits, and releases test results in the computer using the established protocol.
  • Answers technical questions and properly attends to problems that may develop.
  • Perform maintenance, quality control, and calibration on MALDI/VITEK.
  • Provides technical support for the VITEK 2 instrument and performs and interprets fecal tests.
  • Processes, reads, and interprets ova and parasite samples (if applicable)
  • Enters and releases ova and parasite results into the LIS (if applicable)
  • Aliquots media for biochemical testing.
  • Performs, documents, and reviews Quality Control results.
  • Can perform all tasks as described in the Microbiology Laboratory Assistant I and Microbiology Micro Technician I job description.
  • Provides excellent customer service to clients by answering technical questions when they arise.
  • Adheres to scheduled reporting times.
  • Training of new employees.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Qualifications & Compensation
  • Must have a BS degree in Microbiology, Biology, Chemistry or other related science field.
  • MLT/MT/CLS/MLS (ASCP or AMT) certification is preferred but not required.
  • 2 years of laboratory experience in clinical microbiology field is required.
  • Experience in the veterinary field strongly preferred, but not required. Other experience considered as applicable.
  • Team leadership, friendly and loves a challenge.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills required.
  • Robust organizational and time management skills.
  • Must have moderate IT and LIS (Laboratory Information Systems) experience and general high comfort level with computer systems, technology, and equipment interfaces.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, develop and work within a clinical laboratory team, including creative problem solving and flexibility to meet rapid growth.
  • Strong customer service skills required.

Physical Requirements
  • Able to meet the physical requirements that go with working in a lab - standing and sitting for extended periods of time, phone & computer use, extended reach, lifting to 30 pounds, and specific vision ability - close, color, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • This is a fast-paced veterinary reference laboratory. Candidates must be able to work efficiently and accurately in a busy environment and be adaptable to change. The ability to multi-task is crucial.
  • Must be available [Day range, Time Range, and Other (alternating weekends)].
  • Flexible hours and overtime may be required
