We are looking for a self-motivated and passionate engineer with an interest in renewable energy, the evolution of the generation fleet and the transmission system to join our team. This position will be engaged with planning new renewable energy, energy storage systems as well as other generation types. This involves the navigation of projects through the MISO generation interconnection queue, performing modeling to analyze the impacts of the changing resource fleet and finding the best solutions to system and customer needs. The position will also be involved in local and regional transmission planning and understanding ways the transmission system can be optimized using alternative solutions, energy storage and other technologies.

We are seeking candidates that are willing to learn and assume an influential role within the team. Our ideal candidate has an Electrical Engineering degree, experience with the MISO generation interconnection process and proficiency with transmission modeling tools such as PSS/E, TARA and TSAT.

Candidates located in Wisconsin or Iowa will work on a Hybrid basis, offering the flexibility to work from home while also spending time at one of our locations to interact with team members in-person. Relocation assistance will be provided for candidates looking to move to the Cedar Rapids or Madison areas to work on a hybrid basis.

Candidates located in Minnesota, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Nebraska will work on a Remote basis. Limited travel to an office in Wisconsin or Iowa for meetings will be required. Candidates located outside of these states who are not willing to relocate to Madison, WI or Cedar Rapids, IA will not be considered.

What you will do

  • Follows safety rules and practices to identify and correct unsafe conditions for self and team. Strives to identify problems and solutions and makes safety suggestions to assist in maintaining a safe work environment, uses tools and standards to design safety in operating and maintaining equipment.
  • Anticipates customer needs and expectations and proposes solutions. Is proactively involved in the identification and solution of complex problems.
  • Demonstrates strong communication and relationship skills with employees, business unit stakeholders, contractors, regulators, including conflict resolution. Provides guidance to other engineers in the development of their communication and relationship building skills. Viewed as technical resource in discussing technical issues with others from non-technical backgrounds.
  • Interprets regulatory and organizational engineering standards; makes recommendations for changing processes and procedures.
  • Facilitates meetings and lead discussions with stakeholders in support of system studies and application of new technologies.
  • Uses critical thinking skills and in-depth analysis necessary in the interpretation of governmental regulations, regional or company business practices and the development of recommendations to address system issues or Planning Criteria violations.
  • Applies risk assessment methodologies or philosophies relying on technical knowledge. Makes high-risk decisions.
  • Leads or coordinates in departmental or cross functional teams addressing complex technical or operational problems.
  • Participates in or may lead departmental budgeting and planning processes. Oversees multi-year plan and supports oversight of others. Develops complex scopes of work with cost estimate, sequencing, and prioritization. Leads in improving processes and procedures.
  • In-depth understanding of the property unit catalog including interpretation and decision-making in terms of a capital investment project or O&M spend.
  • In-depth understanding if system modeling methodologies and software. Able to build complex models and perform power flow studies or analysis. Provides input in advancing methodologies or software.
  • In-depth understanding of interconnection agreements or other relevant agreement language, terminology, and technical requirements. Modifies existing or creates new agreements including cost sharing. Provides guidance in the understanding or development of agreements, including creation of new templates.
  • In-depth understanding of the tools, data, and process for supporting moderately complex technical reviews and studies related to distribution energy resource interconnection applications with limited guidance provided. Understands and applies power quality concepts with limited guidance provided.
  • Engages in other duties as needed that support Alliant Energy's Values and helps deliver on our Purpose to serve customers and build stronger communities.

Education Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering program that is accredited through the Engineering Accreditation Commission is required.

Required Experience
  • 9 years of related experience.
  • Project management leadership experience preferred, along with ability to deal with subcontractors and cross-functional teams; recognized as having expertise in a particular area of the discipline.
