Position Summary

The position is uniform optional and reports directly to the Associate Director. The position is responsible for conducting investigation of reported or discovered suspicious activities, unusual occurrences, and criminal offenses. The position may be tasked to complete crime analysis for the campus and surrounding areas. The position acts as the victim services contact and is the primary property and evidence technician.

Essential Functions

  • Conducts investigations of reported or discovered suspicious activities, unusual occurrences, and criminal offenses.
  • Interviews suspects, witnesses, and victims.
  • Analyzes video footage from Department and University camera surveillance systems.
  • Writes detailed supplemental and follow-up investigation reports.
  • Provides case management for active investigations. Maintains investigation case files.
  • Collects and disseminates intelligence related data and information.
  • Provides leadership for all Department intelligence gathering operations.
  • Reviews and maintains all Department intelligence documents and evidence. Facilitates information sharing with other agencies.
  • Acts as a Department liaison with law enforcement, social welfare, and emergency service providers.
  • Assists other agencies with off-campus investigations in which substantial university interests are involved.
  • Works special assignments as directed.
  • Adheres to all Department and University policies, procedures, directives, rules and regulations
  • Participates in the interview panel during the Department's selection and hiring process when requested by Senior Management.
  • Participates in the Department's accreditation efforts.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Must successfully complete and maintain certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, and TPR (Threat Pattern Recognition) Use of Force Basic.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of hiring
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license and be insurable under University guidelines; or, obtain a valid Colorado's driver's license within the required time frame.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain certification in Basic First Aid/CPR/AED, Defensive Driving, and TPR (Threat Pattern Recognition) Use of Force Basic
  • Must pass a complete background check to include criminal, motor vehicle report and verification of employment and education
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen and human performance evaluation administered by a University approved physician.
  • Must maintain physical fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments
  • Possess or obtain a City and County of Denver Security Guard License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate's Degree or equivalent credit hours with an emphasis in Criminal Justice, Police Science, or Security Management; or 1+ years related law enforcement/Campus Safety experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 1+ years of practical experience conducting various types of investigations
  • Experience in analyzing large amount of date/information, to include video footage, to identify crime trends and present data in useful format
Physical Activities and Requirements

It is the policy of the Department of Campus Safety (DCS) that all DCS personnel required to have a City and County of Denver issued Security Guard License for their position must successfully pass a job related human performance evaluation as part of a conditional offer of employment. The human performance evaluation shall be administered by an approved University of Denver medical provider and will consist of an evaluation of the following:
  • Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic cones to/from are of need (10lbs) Distance: 5'
  • Carry: Transfer fire extinguisher from wall cabinet to are of need (15lbs) 1x in 5 min
  • Lift/Carry: Transfer traffic barricades to/from storage area, patrol vehicle, area of need (27lbs) Distance 10'
  • Push/Pull: Open/Close parking lot roll gates; must open building doors (15lbs) 1x in 5 min • Push/Pull: Drag incapacitated person out of harm's way; (65 lbs.) 1x in 5 min
  • Climb: Must access 10th floor of campus interior structure during emergency calls when elevators are locked out; must patrol stairways; must pass performance related test (60 steps in under 5 min)
  • Climb: Must access rooftop hatches, rooftop of parking lot. 17 x in under 5 min. (Ladder)
  • Dynamic Posture: Must respond to first aid/medical assist calls, perform CPR. Forward bend to reach a point (1" from floor) 1 x 5 min Specific vision abilities required by this job include correction to 20/30 vision, close vision, distance vision, night vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must also possess the ability to hear, for safety reasons inherent to the essential functions of the job.
  • Must maintain fitness standards to ensure the ability to physically apprehend and detain suspects, provide emergency and protective services, and conduct other physically demanding assignments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and run, climb stairs and must routinely lift and/or move 50 pounds. During emergencies this position may be required to move incapacitated individuals away from dangerous circumstances.

The position works primarily in an office environment; however, the position may be required to work outside in all weather conditions as needed. This position may be assigned to any shift or combination of shifts as deemed necessary by the Associate Director or members of the Department's senior management group. This position may be called upon to work additional hours to cover shifts or provide special event coverage.

Work Schedule

40 hour work week, schedule determined by supervisor.

Salary Grade Number:
The salary grade for the position is 9.

Hourly Range:
The hourly range for this position is $24.91.
