Physical Requirements

In this role, you'll perform field layout, field quantity checks, and quality control on a variety of construction, earthmoving, and related projects using measuring equipment. You will also set up and verify grade elevations and work with the grade crew on construction sites to place water on grade rock to achieve proper moisture content and control dust.

Location: Eugene OR is home base. Travel to Roseburg and Salem as needed.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a current member or able to join Laborers#737.
  • Must have a valid Oregon Driver's license.
  • Safety minded professional who demonstrates good performance, attendance, and punctuality.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age due to the nature of the working environment.
  • Report to the assigned job site in uniform and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Must pass pre-employment physical exam and pre-employment controlled substance testing.
  • Demonstrates the ability to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and nights as needed.
  • Demonstrates the ability to conform to and maintain OSHA, MSHA, DOT and all other company or state rules and regulations.
  • Must have current US Authorization to work or ability to obtain without company assistance prior to start date.

Preferred Qualifications
  • 1-2 years' experience in construction and grade checking.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
  • Sets grade stakes to guide earth moving equipment operators in sloping highways and fill embankments using measuring instruments and hand tools.
  • Reads survey stakes on the jobsite to determine grade specifications for excavating.
  • Measures horizontally and vertically, in specific ratio, from survey stake to juncture of embankment and initial excavation using survey rod and eye level.
  • Sets grade stakes, using mallet, and paints excavation reference points on stake.
  • Repeat measuring and staking at specified intervals to form horizontal stake line along embankment.
  • Observes excavating activities to verify conformance to stake reference and notifies equipment operators or supervisor of deviations.
  • Routinely assist other members of the workforce as needed.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection of vehicle to ensure safe operational order and report maintenance or repair issues.
  • Water roads and construction site to control dust and achieve proper moisture content.
  • Work with grade and pave crews and place water on grade rock for compaction reasons.
  • Monitor various gauges during operation of vehicle. Investigate abnormalities. Complete written report of problems or necessary repairs and forward it to maintenance personnel. Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, defective materials, and unusual conditions to shop personnel. Perform operator maintenance and minor field repairs.
  • Maintain vehicle in a clean and orderly condition, inside and out. Follow prescribed safety rules and regulations.
  • Shovel, rake, compact materials in grade and pave operations, and areas requiring clean-up.
  • Traffic control, including flagging.
  • Underground adjustments, i.e. manholes, catch basins.
  • Routinely assist other members of the workforce in different areas of production.
  • Promptly communicate with supervisors on any flaws in material.
  • Take action to avoid potential hazards or obstructions.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned to meet business needs.
  • Regular and timely attendance.
  • Participate in and promote an inclusive work environment.

The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

  • Regularly exposed to traffic hazards and moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions and vibration. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, however, PPE will be provided by our team to keep you safe. Please provide your own pair of steel-toed boots.
  • Job requires the following motions: bending, hammering, stooping, pushing, pulling, squatting, throwing. Walking and standing occupy most of the work day.
