About the Role

The Engineering Rotational Development Program (ERDP) is all about developing the next generation of industry leaders and technical experts. The purpose of Caterpillar's Engineering Rotational Development Program is to harness your ability and further develop you through rotational assignments and learning opportunities so that you may not only fulfill your career goals but provide excellent service to Caterpillar and its customers. Our Engineering Rotational Development Program enhances the experience of engineering graduates transitioning from student to full-time engineer.

What You Will Do

You'll join a team with diverse project responsibilities and have valuable networking opportunities with all levels of Caterpillar employees. The Power System Simulation Track focuses on support Caterpillar engine and drivetrain VPD (Virtual Product Development), NPI (New Product Introduction), and Continuous Product Improvement (CPI) issues by performing structural/thermal/electromagnetic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) along with dynamic and performance simulation. This includes providing a primary responsibility for developing power system analysis processes and tools in specific areas related to power system durability and performance. Other responsibilities include, performing necessary analysis and initiating ideas; evaluating new products, processes, or systems; communicating results to customers, suppliers, team members; supporting other engineers; providing best actionable recommendations and solutions.

Degree Requirements:
  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or related field (Material science, Civil Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering)
Other Requirements:
  • Minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 3.0/4.0 (no rounding) at current institution
  • Programming skills (C++, Python)
  • Must be willing to travel and relocate domestically.
  • Proficient in ABAQUS, Hypermesh, Simlab, or other commercial FE software packages
  • Experienced on static stress analysis, heat transfer, nonlinear material and large deformation, contact/impact, dynamics, and thermal mechanical FEA analysis using ABAQUS or ANSYS
  • Experience on surrogate model based on reduced order modeling or machine learning/deep learning techniques in the context of finite element analysis
Top Candidates Will Also Have:
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems (engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, etc.)
  • Knowledge of robust design and optimization
  • Background and interest in physics-based analysis of systems and components
  • Knowledge & experience in Machine Learning
  • Ability to write efficient, well-documented code in Python
  • Experience with the operation, design, and/or testing of heavy machinery equipment Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to perform complex assignments
  • Leadership experience
