BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY

The clinical pharmacist is responsible for all aspects of medication preparation and dispensing throughout the institution. This is a weekend option 60% position. The days will be consistent in that it will be every Saturday, and Sunday 0700-1900. The clinical pharmacist oversees preparation and dispensing of sterile and non-sterile products, to all areas of the Downtown Campus. In addition, the clinical pharmacist may complete order verification and provide therapeutic drug monitoring for select patient populations.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Medication Preparation and Dispensing

  • Oversee pharmacy technicians while staffing in dispensing locations.
  • Serve as a contact for medication distribution questions for pharmacy team members and other healthcare professionals.
  • Safely and accurately verify sterile and non-sterile compounded products following USP < 800>, USP < 797>, and USP < 795> guidelines.
  • Check pre-packaged medications, automated and dispensing cabinet batches, floorstock, and emergency drug trays.
  • Troubleshoot automation utilized in dispensing locations.
  • Identification and assistance in resolution of medication system issues.
  • Assist with inventory control including controlled substances.
  • Report of medication errors and process improvment suggestions.
  • Serve on intra- and interdepartmental committes as needed.

  • Order Verification and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM)
  • Evaluate medication orders to ensure accuarcy and appropriateness.
  • Complete pharmacokinetic assessment of drug dosing on appropriate patients.
  • Carry out, through interventions and education, protocol antibiotic and MUE initiatives.
  • Provide drug information to other healthcare professionals.
  • Identify high risk medication therapy be difned admission criteria and reviews the appropriate Selective Monitoring System (SMS) protocol.
  • Complete required departmental competencies.

  • SUPERVISION RECEIVED

    Supervision is received from a Pharmacy Supervisor or other designated official.

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED

    Functional and administrative supervision is exercised over support staff and students.

    Weekend Option Schedule:

    Staff members are scheduled to work 24 hours; two 12 hour shifts. The staff members appointment percentage must be completed within the week (Sunday-to Saturday). For all hours worked during this time period, a differential of fifty percent (50%) will be paid. If the time worked qualifies for shift differential, it will be paid, but no additional weekend differential will be paid. Orientation for this position will occur Monday-Friday until all training is complete.

    QUALIFICATIONS
    • Pharm. D. (Doctor of Pharmacy) degree or Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and one year of applicable experience is required.
    • Current licensure by the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Examiners is required.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
    • Health system pharmacy experience is desirable.
    • Satisfactory completion of an ASHP-accredited residency in hospital pharmacy practice is desirable.
    • Additional training or certification (i.e., specialized residency and/or board certification in an area of practice) is desirable.
