Job Description:
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) has an exciting opportunity for a Behavior Support Specialist (BSS) to join our team and provide on-site visits and observations of staff and people receiving Developmental Disability services to ensure that the services provided meet the person's needs and funding level. The BSS provides support to agencies providers through trainings that lead to decreases in the person's unwanted behaviors and an increase in their skills toward further independence. The BSS also provides supports to the Board Certified Behavior Analysts, Complex Care Coordinator, and Administrator of the CST.

As a member of the Clinical Support Team (CST) the Behavior Support will:

  • Assists Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) in completing functional assessment/analysis, identifying and prioritizing strengths and needs, developing and implementing Behavior Support Plans (BSP), and determining the effectiveness of the behavior support plan as part of the overall habilitation/treatment plan.
  • Provides direction, models, trains, advises, and coaches direct support staff on implementation of BSPs.
  • Observes work of direct support staff to evaluate performance for treatment fidelity, and to recommend changes that strengthen interactions.
  • Instructs, models, and coaches direct support staff on best methods of implementing BSPs.
  • Interacts daily to exchange information through oral and written communication with people served, direct support staff and other program staff, administration and external entities.
  • Calculates and analyzes collected behavioral data and assists BCBA in interpretation of graphs and monthly progress notes for behavior plan modification.
  • Reviews Exception Requests from providers for additional funding to determine if the documentation and data support the need for approval.
  • May be required to do off site visits/observations outside of normal work hours.

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a human services field such as psychology, sociology, special education, counseling, human development, education or speech communication or closely related field AND experience with behavior support plans and habilitation programs for persons with intellectual or other developmental disabilities and/or mental illness. Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience/knowledge working with individuals with DD/ID. Experience implementing behavior support plans and safety plans.

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

Proficient in understanding and addressing developmental disabilities, mental illnesses, and associated behavioral disorders, with expertise in behavioral intervention, active treatment, and Applied Behavior Analysis. Skilled in coaching, problem-solving, and communication. Capable of training staff, adhering to standards and regulations, collaborating with various stakeholders, managing crises, and analyzing assessment data to develop and monitor behavior support plans.

Key Skills and Abilities:
  • Expertise in intellectual and developmental disabilities, mental illnesses, and associated behavioral disorders.
  • Proficient in behavioral intervention, active treatment, and Applied Behavior Analysis principles.
  • Skilled in coaching, problem-solving, and critical thinking.
  • Ability to train staff, adhere to standards, and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Capable of managing crises, analyzing assessment data, and developing behavior support plans.
  • Proficient in arithmetic calculations, document analysis, and implementing behavioral intervention techniques.
  • Able to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and adapt to guidance from BCBAs.
  • Experience in preventive and proactive interventions and multi-modal functional behavior approaches.
