The Opportunity:

This Assistant Director of Federal Relations position serves as a vital member of the WSU system office of External Affairs and Government Relations team representing all five WSU campuses and our global campus. You will play a key role in providing strategic analysis and policy expertise on a variety of topics, including budget, appropriations to advance WSU's institutional advocacy, funding, and policy goals, providing a fixed presence with members of Congress and the Executive Branch including federal agencies, and national-level organizations. The Office of Federal Engagement and Advocacy is the unit within the University responsible for communicating institutional priorities, developing and maintaining positive working relationships, and raising the profile of WSU within the federal government.

You will collaborate with the Assistant Vice President to advance priorities within the offices of the President, Campus Chancellors, and College leadership on legislative, regulatory, budgetary, advocacy, and communications issues. The position requires detailed knowledge of the federal government, the legislative process, including appropriations and authorization, as well as the functions of a land grant university.

Required Qualifications:

  • Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment. Positions may require applicable licensure and/or certification.

  • At least 4-6 years of working with federal elected officials and/or federal agency representatives in a legislative capacity

  • Ability to work with diverse communities and constituents of diverse backgrounds

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Record of dealing with confidential information

  • Understanding of the federal legislative process, including the federal budgetary appropriations and authorization process, advocacy, and communications

  • Experience with a successful track record in a legislative setting with increased responsibilities

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment while maintaining high work standards

  • Flexibility and availability to travel by air several times a year

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain by time of hire, a valid driver's license

  • Willing to locate in Washington, D.C

Monthly Salary: $7,272.22 - $9,323.35

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate's current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.
