About Salve Regina University:
Salve Regina University, ranked as one of the most transformative colleges in the United States by Money Magazine, is a comprehensive Catholic University located in the scenic coastal community of Newport, Rhode Island. The University's commitment to academic success and personal discovery extends beyond its historic campus into a dynamic world where the application of higher thinking and skill are most valued. Salve Regina offers bachelor's and master's degree programs, graduate certificates, and doctoral programs in humanities, international relations and nursing. Enrollment includes more than 2,600 undergraduate and graduate students from across the U.S. and around the world.
Job Description:
With approximately 100 majors and minors, the Department of Music, Theatre and Dance contributes vibrantly to the Salve Regina academic and cultural landscape. Our B.A. and minor in dance offer an innovative curriculum within a liberal arts environment where embodied practice intersects with theory, history, creative process and interdisciplinary learning. With a focus on jazz dance studies, our dance program acknowledges and honors the West African roots and African American origins of jazz. In alignment with the mission of Salve Regina, we strive to offer an education that is inclusive, culturally responsive and antiracist. Our students develop into empathetic, critically conscious artists empowered to impact their communities in ways that promote equity and justice.
JOB DESCRIPTION
Salve Regina University's Department of Music, Theatre and Dance invites applicants for a full time Artist-in Residence. The successful candidate will have teaching experience and artistic practice in one or more of the following dance forms: jazz dance; a jazz-adjacent dance form including but not limited to tap or hip-hop; West African dance or a dance form of the African diaspora. The preferred candidate will have demonstrated experience teaching jazz studies and practice from a rooted perspective where jazz is situated within its historical and sociocultural contexts in relationship to Africanist aesthetics, jazz music, and the values and spirit inherent in the jazz language.
We seek a colleague who is committed to helping students become well rounded artists, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens within an inclusive and engaged community. The ability to work collaboratively with faculty and students across music, theatre and dance is essential. Experience collaborating with jazz musicians is a plus. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrable history as a dedicated educator and a record of social consciousness.
