Examples of Work

  • Receive and log samples, prepare samples for testing, record test results, maintain laboratory and testing equipment, and clean laboratory, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Perform simple math functions to determine test results.
  • Perform tests on soils such as liquid limit, plastic limit, moisture density and similar routine tests.
  • Perform tests on aggregate such as wash tests, sieve analysis and similar routine tests.
  • Perform tests to determine the volumetric properties of asphalt concrete such as air voids, maximum specific gravity, asphalt cement percentage and similar tests. Assist with field testing and sampling along with sample or equipment delivery when necessary. Various other lab duty assignments.
  • Will safely move, lift, load, and unload various heavy equipment and materials with or without assistance.
Qualifications / Requirements
REQUIREMENTS: No specific education, training, or experience is required for entry to this class.

PREFERRED: Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel. Laboratory testing experience. Experience performing research, results recording, and data entry.

OTHER: Must have a valid driver's license or ability to provide independent authorized transportation. Regular and reliable attendance is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of highway construction materials and procedures.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics relating to the material tests used in the Department including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Ability to read and follow detailed test procedures, understand instructions, and apply them to practical work situations.
  • Ability to perform tasks repeatedly while maintaining integrity of results.
  • Must be able to safely move, drag, lift, load, and unload various objects, equipment, materials and supplies, with or without assistance.
