The Lead Technical Writer, in addition to performing technical writing duties, supervises the members of the Technical Writing team, monitors team workload and is responsible for the overall quality of deliverables. The Lead Technical Writer works closely with stakeholders in various Telecommunication Consulting operational units to maintain and improve the documentation strategies and practices within the organization.

Technical Writers are responsible for creating, editing, formatting, organizing, and maintaining content produced for Telecommunication Consulting for network and security operations. They also work closely with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to generate document templates to drive quality and consistency. Technical Writers create, organize, manage, and maintain content across a wide range of subject areas, including software installation and configuration, network and security monitoring, Information Technology (IT) operations, and contract-related deliverables and reports. Some examples of documents produced by Technical Writers include processes, procedures, work instructions, guides, runbooks, and reports.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Guidance

  • Supervise members of the CSS Technical Writing Team, providing guidance and support to team members in performing their work.
  • Manage workload and distribution of work items to ensure the timely delivery of quality documents.
  • Monitor ticketing system for work requests and ensure that all requests are assigned to a Technical Writer in a timely manner.
  • Host scheduled and ad-hoc meetings (teamwide and 1-on-1) to maintain knowledge transfer, balance team workload, and promote an inclusive, hands-on team culture.
Documentation Development
  • Create, organize, update, and maintain internal and customer-facing documentation and related templates.
  • Develop and maintain documentation in the following subject areas:
    • document creation, management, and maintenance
    • document approval streams
    • software installation and configuration
    • data monitoring
    • network architecture and design
    • configuration management
    • disaster recovery
    • any other documentation required by Telecommunication CSS.
  • Work with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to obtain information required to create documentation and follow up with the experts to ensure accurate documents are being released.
Documentation Management, Planning, and Strategy
  • Work with the team to develop standardized documentation practices, including those used to create IT, network, and security documentation.
  • Work with stakeholders to scope deliverables in order to meet project milestones.
  • Work with stakeholders to maintain the existing content structure that houses Telecommunication Consulting documents and knowledge articles.
  • Manage and maintain a documentation delivery plan for ongoing engagements and projects.
  • Provide periodic and ad-hoc status updates to immediate supervisor and upper management, including documentation progress and estimated time required to complete assignments.
Documentation Delivery and Quality Assurance
  • Monitor and continuously improve documentation standards.
  • Enforce stylistic/ formatting practices, content quality, and established document management practices.
  • Follow best practices in document creation, peer review, and document delivery to customers.
  • Perform Quality Assurance (QA) reviews of outgoing/customer-facing documentation as needed.
  • Effectively communicate with team members, SMEs, and Telecommunication management to ensure timely delivery of quality work product.
  • Effectively balance simultaneous high-priority documentation projects.
  • Maintain a flexible work schedule that allows for addition of new assignments and modification of existing deadlines to ensure timely delivery of quality documentation.
Knowledge Sharing
  • Facilitate daily sync- ups and knowledge sharing sessions with the Technical Writing Team to ensure consistency in writing practices and quality of content produced.
  • Seek out and introduce new ideas for improving documentation quality and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with Telecommunication Consulting project teams to share knowledge and promote best practices for content drafting.
Personal Training and Development
  • Perform required security and compliance training and apply those principles to the performance of daily tasks.
  • Perform self-development and continued learning activities required to maintain technical expertise and/or professional certifications.
  • Seek out solutions to common document- related problems.
  • Stay informed about the latest tools and technologies available to enhance documentation.
Qualifying Experience and Attributes

The Lead Technical Writer must have at least five (5) years of professional experience writing technical documents, along with at least three (3) years of experience managing other Technical Writers. The Lead Technical Writer must have strong writing skills and a demonstrated ability to present highly technical information to an audience with or without a technical background, in addition to meeting the skill requirements of Technical Writers and being able to create and format documents. The Lead Technical Writer must also be able to create and maintain templates, as well as maintain an organized inventory of Telecommunication Consulting documents and Power Apps in SharePoint and other repositories. The Lead Technical Writer must also be able to define and manage the team's priorities and provide direction to team members, and work effectively with documentation, stakeholders, and management.
  • At minimum, five (5) years of experience as a Technical Writer.
  • At a minimum, three (3) years of experience managing other Technical Writers.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver quality documentation under tight deadlines and evolving objectives.
  • Highly motivated self-starter with demonstrated ability to work effectively under minimal supervision.
  • Keen attention to detail and ability to recognize subtle inconsistencies content, formatting, and style.
  • Strong leadership and team collaboration skills.
  • Solid understanding of product/systems development lifecycle.
  • A general understanding of the information Technology Service Management (ITSM) framework, related tools, and best practices.
  • Working, advanced-level knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Working knowledge of and hands-on experience with writing and publication tools.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and must be able to pass background check(s).
Preferred Experience and Attributes:
  • A solid understanding of network security, Information Technology (IT) and/or data communication.
  • Interest in producing and maintaining standardized, accurate, and effective IT, network, and security documentation, (e.g., runbooks, configuration guidelines and disaster recovery plans).
  • Highly motivated self-starter with exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience with the following technologies and concepts would be a significant differentiator:
    • Markdown syntax
    • Graph databases and GraphQL
    • LogSeq
    • JSON data structures and other Domain Specific Languages (DSL) such as C4 and Structurizr
