Summary


This position is responsible for direct client care, the implementation of evidence-based readiness and transition programming services for a caseload of participants. Accordingly, it assesses and identifies clinical issues and creates clear objectives and goals. It also tracks and documents participant progress in case reports while working to meet all required internal and external contract standards and policies.


Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completes comprehensive assessment of inmates’ substance abuse history and treatment requirements and develops individualized treatment plan. Document all assessment and treatment planning.
  • The Substance Abuse Counselor will be assigned to either Intensive Outpatient, Outpatient or Therapeutic Community depending on operational needs
  • This position will carry a caseload of 25-50 clients
  • Presents individual counseling/group lectures and didactic presentations weekly based on the areas of Relapse Prevention, Anger Management, Parenting skills, Life Skills, Criminal & Addictive Behaviors, and Co-occurring disorders.
  • Facilitates psycho-educational/behavior modification groups using principles of the “What Works” system. Documents participants’ attendance, participation and progress in Company database.
  • Conducts risk/need assessments and creates individual treatment plans for each assigned participant. Meets regularly with participants and documents participants’ progress or regress in Company database (when available).
  • Maintains accurate clinical documentation including intake summaries, group notes, discharge summaries, treatment plans and updates. Updates therapeutic logs in a timely manner. Enters pertinent information into Company database (when available).
  • Ensures that participants’ records are accurately completed in a timely manner.
  • Identifies problem areas that may impact participants’ ability to successfully complete treatment. Guides participants to develop strategies to overcome obstacles to success completion of treatment.
  • May advise Customer of participants’ progress regularly or at completion of treatment.
  • May maintain a specific substance abuse treatment case file for every program participant.
  • Utilizes crisis intervention techniques if an emergency arises
  • Utilizes conflict resolution strategies
  • Other duties, as assigned.

 

 



Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in any of the social sciences and six (6) months of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; or
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in any unrelated area of study and one (1) year of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; or
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in any of the social sciences; and six (6) months of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; or
  • Master's Degree from an accredited college or university in any unrelated area of study; and one (1) year of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; or
  • Certified Addictions Professional (CAP), Certified Criminal Justice Addictions Professional (CCJAP), Certified Associate Addictions Professional (CAAP), Certified Criminal Justice Associate Addictions Professional (CCJAAP); or
  • An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling; or
  • A High School diploma/GED and six (6) years of professional experience in chemical addiction counseling and/or mental health counseling.
  • Preference given to experience within a correctional setting.
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner in both individual and group counseling settings.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with a team of professionals and have the ability to implement team strategy approaches to work assignments.
  • Ability to work with computers and the necessary software typically used by the department.
