Position Title: Student Services Advanced Specialist, Veteran's Services

Department: Northwest Campus

Rate of Pay: Non-Exempt - B25 - $23.27/hour

Closed Date: June 12, 2022, 5:00 PM Arizona Time 

Position Summary:

The Military and Veteran Services Advanced Specialist serves in a fast-paced team environment as a high-level resource specialist in multiple areas of student services supporting the success of the active duty and veteran student population. The areas include, but are not limited to:

  • Military and Veteran services
  • Tuition assistance
  • VA Education Benefits
  • Academic advising
  • College admissions
  • Assessment and testing
  • Financial aid
  • New student and Veteran Benefit Recipient (VBR) orientation
  • Registration
  • Military and Veteran Services self-service stations
  • Higher Education Student Services

The work schedule for this position is flexible and will include working evenings and weekends and local travel. Job sites are subject to change based on business need.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Advise students on policies, procedures, and processes pertaining to multiple functional areas, academic programs, and student populations, which include but are not limited to: Military and Veteran Services, academic advising, certification, tuition assistance (TA), compliance, customer service, admissions, assessment/testing, financial aid advising, new student and VBR orientation, registration, retention, self-service stations, student portal, and TA portals
  • Train and assist students to navigate the student and TA portals and online active duty and veteran resources
  • Stay informed and updated on curriculum and program requirements and changes
  • Make decisions and/or recommendations according to complex guidelines for academic advising
  • Provide customer service to students and the general public
  • Assist in resolving student complaints and concerns
  • Hire, train, and supervise VA Work Study students
  • Make recommendations for process changes and improvements
  • Prepare reports and conduct data collection
  • May organize transfer fairs, projects or activities including training, orientations, and facilitating workshops; attend community outreach events
  • Participate in setting program goals and objectives
  • Perform other duties of a similar nature or level as required

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree and
  • Three years of experience in multiple areas within student services; or related experience (academic, career advising). Including but not limited to:
    • Veteran's services
    • Academic advising
    • Tuition assistance (TA)
    • College admissions
    • Assessment and testing
    • Financial aid
    • Graduation services
    • New student orientation
    • Registration
    • Welcome desk
Preferred:
  • Tuition Assistance Experience
  • Military Veteran
  • Veteran and Military Services experience
  • Veteran's Affairs GI Bill certification experience
  • Veteran's Affairs compliance experience

The ideal candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Strong compliance background
  • Strong academic advising background
  • Knowledge, training, experience working with veterans transitioning from the military
  • Extensive customer service experience
  • Familiarity with providing virtual support services to students
  • Familiarity with academic transcripts and transfer credit pertaining to program of study
  • Demonstrated ability to provide comprehensive academic advising by phone and email
  • Strong, clear, concise verbal and written communication
  • Operational expertise in multiple areas of student services
  • Critical thinking to identify, evaluate, research, and solve complex problems that cross multiple areas of student services
  • Community outreach with understanding of military protocols
  • Academic development principles
  • Desktop computing and applicable software
  • Applicable state and federal laws, rules, and regulations
  • Work prioritization while performing multiple tasks/attention to detail
  • Manage own time and work independently
  • Develop, build, and maintain positive interpersonal relationships
  • Read, review, and comprehend student records
  • Maintain security of confidential student records
  • Compile and create reports
