Summary

The Systems Engineering Senior Manager is a highly visible position. In this role individual will provide functional and technical leadership to the systems engineering team. The team is responsible for product development of with end-to-end technical responsibilities. Some of these responsibilities may consist of working cross-functionally transposing marketing requirements into systems requirement, working with functional teams to decompose system requirements into functional requirements. Throughout the development cycle ensure overall system meets customer needs.

To maximize impact, the Systems Engineering Team operates in the earliest phases to capture and develop technology and product requirements from internal and external stakeholders, understand and quantify product use conditions, design system architectures, identify/manage product interfaces, define/resolve/optimize tradeoffs between conflicting requirements, lead technology ideation, proof of concept, and down-selection activities, facilitate communication between functional teams, and plan/execute subsystem and system integration testing and verification.

Members of the Systems Engineering Team may also lead or support activities to understand the current and future needs of our customers and our business, explore and evaluate new technologies and concepts for meeting those needs, and rapidly demonstrate feasibility of such technologies through rigorous modeling, analysis, prototyping, experimentation, and other risk identification and mitigation activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Hiring and ensuring the team is comprised of diverse, highly qualified staff who have the technical competencies/proficiencies to meet current and future engineering needs.
  • Coaching, mentorship, and constructive feedback to the team to increase technical proficiency, provide career development and growth.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and engaged work environment. Inspiring an energized, empowered and accountable work force.
  • Managing the development goals, objectives, and strategies for system engineering team.
  • Working with program managers and other functional manager to allocate people and resources per plan and budget. Ensuring the team is aligned with meeting program timelines and milestones. Participation in formal design reviews.
  • Developing and maintaining system assets including requirement and design documentation of various levels, traceability; providing guidance to risk management and V&V activities.
  • Serving as liaison between R&D and marketing, regulatory, quality, operation, and other non-engineering departments
  • Managing system level product development processes like issue tracking, risk management, systems behavior definition, change control, ripple effect analysis, etc.
  • Systems engineering team leadership: Communicating to senior management as required including technical presentations, status updates, and program reviews as required
  • Coordinates and manages resources to meet detailed project timelines and milestones
  • Remains current on developments in field(s) of expertise, systems engineering best practices, regulatory requirements, as well as industry trends.
  • Promoting and supporting the development intellectual property.
  • Support all company initiatives as identified by management and in support of Quality Management Systems (QMS), Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and other regulatory requirements.
  • Participate on technology and development teams by acquiring knowledge of product function and use conditions and contribute to the design reviews through defining and managing requirements, identifying issues, and recommending design improvements

Experience and Education

  • Typically requires a Bachelors degree with 13+ years of industry experience.
  • 5-8 years of previous people management experience.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience managing engineering team
  • Strong communication skills, must be able to effectively communicate information at multiple levels in the organization
  • Experience working in a broader enterprise and cross functionally
  • Strong organizational, planning, and budgeting skills

Preferred Experience

  • 5+ years of experience in a regulated medical device space or similar environment
  • Master's Degree in related engineering
  • Statistical analysis or similar tool experience.
  • Experience with pre-clinical, clinical or field studies

Functional Description

Directs the activities of a staff integrating hardware and/or software framework, systems and/or product design functions or designing underlying architecture for use in one or more product offerings. Evaluates final results of design assuring accomplishment of technical objectives. Prepares and presents reports outlining the outcome of projects and makes recommendations for actions necessary to achieve desired results. Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function.

  • Provides guidance and support to team members / employees.
  • Establishes and assures adherence to budgets, schedules, work plans, and performance requirements.
  • Requires the ability to effectively influence others and manage sensitive situations.

  • Works on issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth knowledge of organizational objectives.
  • Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve results will add to costs and may impact the short-term goals of the organization.

Management

  • Manages activities of two or more sections or departments.
  • Directly manages the coordination of the activities within a function/department with responsibility for results.
  • In some instances may be responsible for a functional area or contracted / outsourced employees or matrixed reports and not have any direct reports within the organization.
  • People management responsibilities include hiring / terminations, performance reviews, career development coaching, and compensation decisions.

Workplace Type

  • The Workplace Type for this role is Assigned Desk. Based on the nature of your role you will have an assigned desk or office located at a Dexcom site and should plan to be onsite approximately 4-5 days per week.
