Overview

The Claims Manager oversees and directs the overall management of professional liability claims including coverage, investigation, evaluation, reserving, litigation management and negotiation. The Claims Manager also provides training, mentoring and support throughout the claim process. There is a big emphasis on Legal Malpractice and Agents E&O.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the handling of all aspects of claims including training on reserving, communication, documentation, litigation management, evaluation, negotiation and settlement.
  • Ensures complete and sound claim settlements, legal reviews and investigations.
  • Monitors the file progression including trial activity on files with significant loss impact and participates in file review sessions to determine direction.
  • Plans, prioritizes and assigns the workload to ensure prompt file handling and maintain work production.
  • Directs the implementation and ongoing maintenance of claims handling systems, policies and procedures.
  • Provides file authority as appropriate to staff.
  • Reviews quality audit results to assure deficiencies are addressed.
  • Prepares regular periodic reports and monitors system reports to ensure adherence to corporate and regulatory standards.
  • Assures that all customers receive quality service.
  • Establishes and executes controls to ensure that the quality of the work meets or exceeds standards.
  • Reviews and analyzes processes, procedures and workflows to identify opportunities for process improvement and efficiency.
  • Participates in the specialized handling of complex claim matters and projects requiring advanced claim knowledge and experience.
  • Provides personnel administration including selection, training, performance appraisals, salary administration, employee development and affirmative action.
  • Communicates with upper level management regarding training techniques, discussion of complaints, new coverages or laws and reinsurance reporting.
  • Assists in the preparation and management of the departmental budget and manages expenses.
  • Interfaces with relevant underwriters and actuaries on claims trends and underwriting business plans.


Qualifications

  • Thorough understanding of laws, principles of coverage, liability and insurance industry in general.
  • Technical knowledge of insurance policies and coverages with analytical ability to make essential decisions when necessary.
  • Analytical and human relations skills are critical.
  • Leadership skills, ability to plan, organize, delegate and develop corporate human resources.
  • Effective communication skills; ability to obtain information from others and deliver information to others orally and in written form.
  • Ability to carry out detailed written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to work with little supervision and direction.
  • Ability to operate business technology.



Education/Experience
  • College degree or 10 years equivalent experience and skills required.
  • Valid adjuster's license in appropriate jurisdictions or ability to obtain such.
