The Senior Director of The Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Center for Trauma Innovation (the Stepping Strong Center) will provide both intellectual and administrative leadership to this unique, first-of-its kind multi-disciplinary innovation center with a hands-on, dynamic, can-do attitude toward both high-level strategic thinking and tactical organizational and infrastructure-related tasks associated with taking a mission-driven start-up, not-for-profit organization to the next level.

The Senior Director, in collaboration with the Stepping Strong Medical Directors, Advisory Board Chair and leadership team, will lead in the goal-setting process for short- and long-term strategy, prudent deployment of financial resources, establishing operational protocols, and management of the Center's programs spanning research, innovation and injury prevention. The Senior Director will also execute on the strategy and will be responsible for managing the Center's resources to meet desired goals.

The Senior Director will report to the Stepping Strong Medical Directors and work closely with the Advisory Board Chair and other leadership team members. The Senior Director will partner closely with Brigham/MGH Chairs in related clinical areas (Orthopedics, Plastics, Vascular, Emergency Medicine, Trauma Burn Surgery and Critical Care, etc.) and members of the Brigham administrative teams that support the Center (Development, Office of Strategic Communications, Government Affairs, etc.)

The Senior Director will be accountable for the daily operations of the Stepping Strong Center. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Strategic Planning
• Work closely with Strategy and Innovation Director (Matthew Carty, MD), Ali Salim, MD (Medical Director), Mitch Harris, MD (Medical Director), Audrey Epstein Reny (Advisory Board Chair), other members of the leadership team including Donna Woonteiler (Communications Director) and Molly Jarman (Injury Prevention Director), as well as the Medical Executive Committee and the Advisory Board in an annual strategic planning process to develop and revise both long- and short-term research/program priorities, center policies and fundraising goals.
• Collaborate closely with the Stepping Strong Center's Directors, Advisory Board Chair and members of the Advisory Board to guide our newly developed strategic vision into tactics and timetables to achieve the Center's multifaceted goals.
• Lead implementation of strategic priorities with guidance and support from the Directors and Advisory Board Chair and in partnership with other Center staff.
• Continuously strive to move ideas forward by establishing deadlines and meeting them in a timely manner.

Administrative Responsibilities
• Establish systems, reports, benchmarking tools and tracking mechanisms for all aspects of Center operations including: finances, staffing, programs and community relations (medical, scientific and lay advisory board)
• Report on Center progress and operations via weekly and monthly updates with the leadership team.
• Develop agendas and report on progress through presentations to the Stepping Strong Advisory Board (no less than twice annually).
• Assist the Medical Directors in organizing and leading the activities of the Medical Executive Committee including: establishing roles and responsibilities, developing ongoing communication schedule and meeting dates, etc.
• Organize the annual Stepping Strong Trauma Symposium and other events that seek to build awareness for the work of the Stepping Strong Center.
• Attend lectures/grand rounds in trauma care to become an effective and knowledgeable leader on topics relevant to the growth and further development of the Stepping Strong research community.
• Work closely with colleagues at Brigham's Development Office on corporate sponsorships, foundation outreach, running program events and endowment initiatives.

Relationship Development & Management
• Represent the collaborative, inclusive, dynamic team spirit that the Stepping Strong Center embodies in interactions with internal and external audiences. Maintain a high level of knowledge and enthusiasm for all things related to the Stepping Strong Center.
• Develop and maintain internal and external partnerships with collaborating organizations including but not limited to: iHub, BRI, Partners Innovation, Brigham Development, Brigham Translational Accelerator, the Boston Athletic Association, the Wyss Institute, Karp Labs, Harvard, MIT, NEU, BMC, Tufts, BI, MGH and Gillette Stadium.
• Nurture and support the growing Stepping Strong research community with value-added services including but not limited to: mentorship, grant writing assistance, commercialization skills, funding resources, collaborative partnerships, etc.
• Build strong connections to all programs that fall under the Stepping Strong Injury Prevention Program, with the Brigham and beyond.
• Partner with the Brigham's service line administration within the departments where the Stepping Strong Center currently has a footprint or would like to establish one, such as: Orthopaedics, Plastics, Vascular, Emergency Medicine, Trauma Burn and Critical Care, and the Center for Surgery and Public Health.
• Establish meaningful relationships with Medical Executive Committee and Advisory Board members to effectively utilize their input, knowledge and networks to build the Center.

Research - Awarded
• Oversee researcher output related to the Stepping Strong Center in the form of monitoring the $4M+ in distributed funds to current and past Stepping Strong Research Scholar, Innovator, Breakthrough and Explorer awardees.
• Aggregate all awardee scientific reports, publications and subsequent funding in a database on a timely basis to report out to leadership team and for use in external communications.

Research - Working Groups/Partnerships
• Coordinate the development of faculty-led Stepping Strong Innovation Working Groups and the activities of the Medical Executive Committee.
• With the Centers' administration, Medical Executive and Advisory Board members, propose and consider new initiatives for the Center to enhance trauma-funded innovation and propel injury prevention initiatives, all with the vision of transforming trauma care.
• Under the direction of the Medical Directors and Advisory Board Chair, assist in determining Stepping Strong Center-funded projects.
• Assist the current awardees as they leverage current research efforts toward proposals for additional extramural funding opportunities. Ensure these efforts are continuously supported as we increase the size and scope of our affiliated faculty and members.
• Support researchers and Stepping Strong faculty in work that is related to the Center including:
o Developing pathways of support/mentorship for junior investigators
o Navigating researchers' ideas through the Brigham innovation pipeline
o Assisting with the Center's granting process
o Coordinating meetings with potential resources (internal and external to the Mass General Brigham's system)
o Researching and sharing external grant funding opportunities
o Leading and coordinating cross-departmental programs that touch the Center.
o Working with Brigham and faculty on the possibility of a coordinated military partnership managed by the Stepping Strong Center

Financial Management
• Lead the budgetary process of the Stepping Strong Center, including review of funding requests for approval by the Medical Directors or designated approval body; assist with the allocation of the Center's annual budget of ~$1.2M, two endowment funds and accrued accounts.
• Manage the Center's financial reporting including setting budgets for each program, tracking finances, monitoring spending, preparing monthly financial summaries, and supporting external auditors.
• Create and maintain a suite of financial reports in development with the leadership team to support effective deployment of the Center's resources.
• Develop business plans for growing current programs (e.g., Injury Prevention, Innovator Awards, Stop the Bleed) in conjunction with program managers, physicians, etc.
• Evaluate new ideas and develop business plans for potential new Stepping Strong Center programs to effectively put funds raised to work in support of the mission.
• Seek out new areas of funding in areas including but not limited to: philanthropy, foundations and corporations.

Additional Responsibilities:
• Support the Stepping Strong Center's efforts to be a leading voice and advocate for injury prevention and trauma innovation.
• Extend the Center's mission to establish advocacy initiatives in conjunction with the Brigham's Government Affairs Office.
• Serve as a liaison to our research and injury prevention communities.
• FTE supervision responsibility TBD as programs develop.
• Anticipate and resolve problems related to the Center.
• Proactively look for ways that the Stepping Strong Center can better serve its constituents.
Maintain transparency and effective communication about daily activities and ongoing projects.
• Serve as a Stepping Strong ambassador at Center-related events.

Qualifications
Required:
• Master's degree (MBA, MPH, MHA, MPA, etc.)
• 10-15 years of related experience
• Experience leading a team and developing and executing strategies based on clearly defined outcomes/objectives and measures of performance

Preferred/Desired:
• Doctoral degree
• Understanding of granting processes
• Experience in grant writing

Skills and Competencies:
• Extensive experience in developing and leading a not-for-profit or start-up, interfacing with clinicians/researchers/engineers and promoting the translation of research ideas to the end user (patients).
• Excellent organizational and problem-solving capability to work collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional and unstructured setting.
• Strong experience with strategic and financial planning, both short and long term, preferably in a start-up or not-for-profit setting.
• Excellent writing and communication skills for a wide range of audiences including: clinicians, potential donors, advisory board members, volunteers, service-recipients/patients and running community.

• Be a self-starter who is comfortable charting a course and balancing input from a passionate but busy group of medical professionals and lay leaders.
• Be able to think at the highest strategic level, yet also be attentive to daily details and willing to take on a wide variety of tasks to get the job done with a can-do, make it fun attitude.
• Be able to multi-task on a variety of projects and creatively stretch the resources of a philanthropically funded Center.
• Be collaborative and transparent.
• Have a good sense of humor, embrace intellectually challenging pursuits and seek rewarding day to day experiences.
• Want to make a difference in changing the lives of trauma survivors.
