Negotiate and manage contractual relationships with journal editors and societies. Manage and take responsibility for the day-to-day publishing operations that maintain and develop the existing portfolio, e.g. cost control, publication schedule, fulfillment, commercial sales. Ensure that both product-related results (invoiced and realized turnover, non-subscription sales, etc) and market-related achievements (page growth, market share, citation indices, online usage, author-editor-reviewer feedback, etc) meet budgets and agreed on targets. Provide input to the annual pricing/budgeting process for the portfolio when required. Input to marketing plans for the assigned product portfolio New business development: Identify new market needs and business opportunities.
Based on market requirements and in line with strategy, initiate, propose and develop new products and services, pursue acquisitions of journals (society and proprietary/subscription and Open Access) or other relevant products and services, for a new profitable business. Ensure that market-related achievements meet or exceed plans and targets: acquisitions of society and proprietary journals, start-ups of new journals, development of other new products and services.Relationship management:
Establish, manage, and maintain excellent contacts and networks with key external stakeholders in the relevant specialty, especially with journal editors and society representatives, with a view to:
1) understanding their professional and organizational needs; and
2) ongoing development of journals and other products or services, and or acquisitions of society and proprietary journals. Establish, manage, and maintain excellent contacts with key stakeholders within the business; coordinate their activities as they relate to journal needsLeadership:
Aligning performance for success, setting goals and development plans, monitor progress, developing staff and coaching for best performance General KnowledgeTechnical Skills:
Good knowledge of the health science world and its sociology. Good knowledge of the publishing process and related developments. Financial planning and analysis, commercial awareness, business management skills. Scanning the horizon for the latest developments, eg new technologies, business models, etcRequired Education and Experience:
Bachelor's or Masters's degree.
Experience of scientific and or medical publishing, including working with professional associations, with demonstrated ability to manage and grow a journals publishing program,
