The Product Planning & Development Manager for SOHO (Small Office/Home Office) products leads and manages the complete product planning and life cycle for consumer laser (color/monochrome) and inkjet product lines sold through multi-channel retailing (brick & mortar, ecommerce, catalog, etc.). This role creates and enhances Brother's consumer product line.

This role manages several aspects of product planning & development, including but not limited to: 2-5-year product roadmap planning, feature/function specifications and enhancements, market analysis,
refinement of the long-term product strategy & development, facilitating tradeoffs with technology, costs and customer needs, and ensuring commercial excellence and viability for product introductions.

This business-planning focused position works closely with product marketing management, Brother international counterparts and engineers, as well as Sales and commercial leaders throughout the organization to support the development of the new product roadmap. This position assesses the
competition and benchmark Brother's SOHO business, identifying weaknesses, strengths, and opportunities for growth.

Product Planning & Business Development 50%

  • Lead, manage and organize all recommendations on new product development, working closely with domestic and international counterparts on short-term and long-term (3-5 years) product roadmaps
  • Lead the Product Planning process to a successful handoff of all projects to the Product Marketing team and maintain ownership for the product roadmap and all communication throughout the project
  • Participate in life-cycle product maintenance, from development to end of-life for SOHO segments, working with the Product Marketing team on stated objectives and strategic priorities
  • Collaborate closely with internal and external stakeholders (including international) to create effective product roadmaps
  • Support the Product Marketing team with executing the long-term vision and strategy for products and technical workflows; communicate this strategy to all relevant participants and partners
  • Work in close partnership with Product Marketing and other Product Development departments to define new product innovations, technology success criteria, roadmaps, and capitalize on business opportunities
  • Solve complex profit/cost problems and recommend solutions to the Product Marketing team in order to make informed and educated decisions
  • Act as main point of contact for software/app solutions from our Product Marketing group with internal Solutions team and international counterparts

Product Specific Development 30%

  • Act as primary contact for Japan headquarters on all product development related issues
  • Work closely with Product Marketing team and other internal resources to develop fully informed decisions and inquires related to future products
  • Review projects and programs regularly to assure ongoing alignment with Product Marketing, Executive leadership, and broader internal and external Brother teams, outlining all decisions needed within the project or program
  • Coordinate team evaluation of roadmap and gain team consensus on critical workflows that need to be communicated to Japan and other international teams
  • Develop presentation materials, charts, documents, or graphics to help illustrate Brother USA's perspective and requirements for product launch
  • Act as a global influencer and consensus builder to articulate North American strategy with other global sales/marketing offices to build consensus around product strategy and engineering needs
  • Communicate product development updates to Brother International subsidiaries to keep other local country product management teams informed of key strategies and progress
  • Take input as needed from other North/South American offices as needed; share that feedback with Brother USA teams to make informed 30% decisions with Japan headquarters
  • Own the creative process of generating, developing, and curating new insights

Business Analytics & Reporting 20%

  • Proactively evaluate and analyze segments, providing insight and recommendations to the team on areas for product improvement, technical improvements and new technology implications. Identifying unmet customer needs and desired outcomes through customer / market research; lead team on building new business cases around opportunities putting them in context of the roadmap and desired improvements.
  • Understand technology and competitive position of defined technology within Consumer / Business applications, markets and business segments that provide opportunities for profitable growth
  • Act as technical subject matter expert on SOHO segments, including in-depth knowledge on competitive technology and specs, as well as up-incoming consumer trends / wants / needs
  • Perform deep Competitive analysis including comparing products, new product launches, and future scenario building; capable of communicating competitor strategy and making presentations to leadership

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience (Master's Degree MBA Preferred)
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in Product Planning & Development, preferably in consumer electronics or similar field
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience managing the Product Commercialization Process, including stage gate development practices and Launch Excellence
  • Minimum 2 years of experience working in R&D or Innovation Department under the direction of an experienced Product Development manager
  • Strong skills in verbal and written communication to advocate for the defined roadmap with team and internal stakeholders
  • Strong ability to lead presentations and/or training
