Wood is recruiting employees as Forest Industry (FI) Specialists and Staff Consulting Engineers in Wood's current and rapidly growing Pulp and Paper business.

Wood has immediate opportunities for a Process Consultant - Fiberline Subject Matter Expert (SME) having focus on systems to process wood into the range of pulp fiber products. Location and remote working options are open for discussion.

Ideally this role will be located in the Atlanta Georgia, Greenville South Carolina or Vancouver BC regions but we are open to suitable candidates based in any geographical locations across North America with the ability to travel as needed.

We execute studies and engineering projects of a wide range of complexity and size. Customers rely on our engineering design experience and lessons learned where we provide certainty of outcome through world class project delivery.

The role for a Fiberline SME is to provide Pulp and Paper process leadership during front end study work on projects of manufacturing systems, and also has a strong influence in the overall development and execution in a project's full life cycle. In this position, the SME provides process consulting and engineering expertise in conceptual studies, feasibility analysis, construction grade scope and estimates, detailed design, start-up, system optimization, and troubleshooting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Fiberline expertise in both external client projects and internal guidance to Wood colleagues and junior engineers.
  • Lead Fiberline project staff and teams in delivering world-class project delivery solutions for studies and capital projects and programs.
  • SME will have lead process role in studies, from conceptual through to feasibility definition. Fiberline expertise is crucial in leading studies.
  • SME will have staff consulting engineering roles in detail design phases of projects. Activities will range from design basis definition through equipment selections and detail design guidance to process and project engineers.
  • Roles in consulting studies are anticipated, include troubleshooting, optimization concepts, and due diligence assignments.
  • Assignments may occasionally include as a Process Lead Engineer on detail design work, though not preferred.
  • Support to business development, proposals, and sales teams is anticipated.
  • Leverage your resume, industry knowledge, and network relationships towards growth of Wood's FI business.
  • Lead with Wood's health, safety, security, and environmental procedures and intervene with appropriate action.
  • Business travel is expected for SME roles, and amount will vary with assignments. Full time secondment roles are not expected.
  • As a senior consulting engineer, mentoring of younger staff is critical for expertise and knowledge growth in Wood's capabilities in the FI sector.


Skills / Qualifications

  • BS degree or higher in engineering with a preference for Pulp and Paper Science, Mechanical, or Chemical disciplines.
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of post-degree working experience.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years in the Pulp and Paper Industry.
  • Preference of at least five (5) years in the consulting engineering business.
  • Extensive Fiberline equipment, systems design, operations knowledge, and experience as the basis of SME role. Chemical pulping is the main focus but includes mechanical and semi-chem pulping. Topic areas include chips/wood through pulp HD storage.
  • Strong network and relationships in the Pulp & Paper Industry.
  • Passion for safety and environmental stewardship in all that you do.
  • Experience in supporting roles of business development and sales is a strong plus.
  • Experience should include proven examples of the candidate's ability to lead teams in process consulting and engineering activities that deliver safe, quality projects within contractual obligations both on time and within budget.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Comfortable and proficient in communicating in both written and verbal forms with client's senior and project management, client operations and project staff, internal engineers and designers, vendors, construction staff, and the like.
  • Preference to have process simulation skills and familiarity with common software tools.
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365 suite of apps.
  • Authorization to work lawfully in the US without sponsorship from Wood is required.
