Advanced Practice Provider (NP/PA) GI/Motility Center

The MGH Neurointestinal Health and Motility Center is looking for an energetic, motivated advanced practice provider (APP) to join our exciting, fast paced practice. Under the supervision and direction of the APP Manager, Senior Administrative Director and faculty of the MGH Neurointestinal Health and Motility Center and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant practice. The APP will support clinical activities of the GI Neurointestinal Health and Motility Center with help in maintaining continuity of care seeing follow up patients.

The APP will be clinical based with 8 clinical sessions with one hour of administrative time given for each session of clinic. In preparation for visits, the APP will be available for both urgent and continuity of care visits for patients in the motility and neurointestinal health center.

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilitating Access Responsibilities

Working closely with a dedicated team of physicians, APPs, nurses and coordinators, the APP plays a critical role in delivering direct patient care. Neurointestinal health and motility includes functional disorders such as esophageal issues including but not limited to dysphagia, achalasia, and GERD, gastroparesis, cyclic vomiting syndrome functional dyspepsia, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome. There is also a component of behavioral health training looking at the brain-gut axis that the incumbent would have the opportunity to participate. In addition, the APP would work closely with other members of the Digestive Health Care Center in surgery and oncology departments to ensure a smooth transition of patient care. The APP will identify areas of patient need. In collaboration with the group, the APP is encouraged to further develop niche clinics to respond to these identified patient needs.

Clinical

  • Provides continuity of care for patients in follow up visits with an expectation of performing 8 sessions of clinical work. The APP will be seeing 6 patients per four-hour session after a 6-8 week orientation period.
  • Working collaboratively with members of the healthcare team including MD, other APPs, RNs, MAs and patient coordinators to ensure patient outcomes.
  • Attend hospital grand rounds, read peer reviewed journals and attend trainings as needed to stay clinically current.
  • Work closely with the Digestive Health Care Center members including GI surgery and oncology to facilitate patient care access through clinic visits and participating in multi-disciplinary programs including the SHED (swallowing, heartburn, esophageal disorder) group and pelvic floor disorder group.
Educational
  • Develops and implements routine patient instructions for GI motility disorders
  • Acts as a resource to other care providers with questions about GI motility disorders and their management
  • Assists with ongoing clinical research through follow-up of patients currently involved in MGH Neurointestinal Health and Motility Center
  • Assists with recruitment for current clinical research
Relationship Management Responsibilities

Is responsible for maintaining relationships with new and existing referring physicians and their clinical and office staff. Serves as a liaison and facilitator of communication between physicians, administration, and community.
  • Works closely with to team to provide information to support outreach visits and efforts
  • Identifies and summarizes referring physician/center/clinician needs to the MGH Neurointestinal Health and Motility Center
  • Follows-up on all requests to ensure satisfied patients and referring providers
  • Documents and reports patient questions, concerns, complaints, and resolutions
  • Acts as a resource to other clinical specialties.
Other Responsibilities
  • Participates as requested in MGH and Massgeneral Brigham (MGB) system-wide quality initiatives
  • Participates in various hospital and system committees as assigned
  • Attends internal and external education meetings and reads appropriate professional journals to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence. Is encouraged to advance his/her medical and technical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care


Qualifications
Qualifications
  • Must be a highly motivated individual who has a proven track record of working with diverse healthcare teams
  • Must work in a collaborative manner with all providers and staff
  • Must be willing to adapt to change and be a flexible team player in the setting a very complex patient population
  • Master's degree in nursing (MSN/nurse practitioner) or master's degree in physician assistant studies (MS/MPAS).
  • Possess the maturity, self-confidence, and ability to develop the clinical initiatives to support the management of GI motility disorders
  • We encourage new graduate applicants with experience in the healthcare system however it is preferred to have at least one-year experience in the advanced practice role particularly in the gastroenterology/psychiatry arena. Candidates with staff nurse experience in gastroenterology/psychiatry will also be considered.
