The Phlebotomist/Lab Technician I is responsible for supporting research programs at the Partners Multiple Sclerosis Center. Research responsibilities include performing phlebotomy, processing blood samples (centrifuge), collecting and processing urine samples, proper packaging of samples for transport, and maintaining inventory. The Phlebotomist/Lab Technician I may be required to perform other tasks as needed or requested by the Practice Manager, Research Director and/or Senior practice assistant.Demonstrate professional customer service skills whenever interacting with customer.Perform receptionist and clerical dutiesGreets patients arriving in the phlebotomy laboratory.Answer phone in an appropriate manner.Logs into computer, accesses EPIC and SunquestPrint and Fax results as needed making certain HIPPA protocols are followe Performs Phlebotomy and other responsibilities related to phlebotomyPerforms routine and difficult venipuncture on young adults, adults, and geriatric populations using aseptic and proper technique.Perform heel-sticks and finger-sticks as needed.Collect blood culture using aseptic techniques.Prepares the blood drawing area for patients, making certain an appropriate inventory of supplies is maintained and that the area is maintained in a clean and orderly manner.Logs, uses and maintains Sunquest collection manager devices. Generates and affix barcode labels to specimens after collection in the presence of patient.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Indicate key areas of responsibility, major job duties, special projects and key objectives for this position. These items should be evaluated throughout the year and included in the written annual evaluation.
g. Demonstrates the skills and competence to perform/prepare patients for venipuncture/stick.
h. Maintains the blood drawing area clean and organized.
i. Routinely inspects tubes and other supplies for expiration dates and discards as appropriate.
j. Follows all Infection Control Guidelines throughout the venipuncture/stick procedure.
k. Follow Hospital Hand Hygiene policy between all procedures and patients.
l. Completes phlebotomy check sheets, logbooks and other documentation as required.Uses centrifuge to spin samples. Aliquots samples as required per protocol.Retrieves orders from EPIC and obtains clinic blood samples if ordered.Completes IATA training for dangerous goods transport.Packages samples using ice or dry ice as appropriate per protocol. Maintains and stocks inventory. Orders research, medical and office supplies.Demonstrates professional behavior and customer service skills at all time

Logs into the computer, all tests checked off on the requisition, making certain all pertinent information and comments are included in the process. Creates HOV and release test orders using the EPIC Hyperspace system. Produces bar code labels to affix to specimens after collection. Makes certain that specimens are appropriately labels and collected. Maintains correct paperwork and procedures specific to 850 Boylston Street. Processes specimens for testing:Accessions specimens. Performs rapid receipt in SQ LIS, manual log-in procedures, making certain all pertinent information is included in the process. Makes certain all "stat" and other priority samples are processed first.Labels specimens as necessary and properly forwards them for testing. Makes certain the number and color of tubes is correct. Makes certain "stat" specimens are readied for processing first. Alerts bloods gas technician when specimen is ready for testing. Processes specimens by centrifugation. Makes certain specimens are spun in order of their priority and knowing the correct centrifugation speed/mode.Aliquots samples as neede Makes certain that amounts and types of specimens are aliquoted correctly. Maintains sample integrity per established procedures. Places samples in the appropriate locations for pick-up by partner's courier. Responsible for receiving, sorting and triaging all samples arriving in the lab.Makes sure that stat and other priority samples are processed first.Makes sure that all samples are accounted for, time stamped and distributed among workstations per established procedures. Maintains sample integrity per established procedures.Maintains order among requisitions to facilitate timely processing and minimize delays. Notifies manager of backups.Assists with workflow issues and other duties as directed by the senior staff. Answers the phone as needed: provides information and performs add-ons as requested by the clinician. Refers callers appropriately when indicateAssists with emergency procedures during computer down time, following established protocols under the direction of the tech in charg Informs Coordinator and Supervisor when workstation supplies are low. Responsible for maintaining a safe work area and adhering to all safety, Infection Control, and OSHA guidelines and policies. Demonstrates professional customer service skills whenever interacting with a customer. Performs support services as assigned and other duties as required. Is responsible for all other responsibilities and duties necessary for the day to day operations of the laboratory including safety and compliance OSHA. Responsible to be aware of JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals and to comply with BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures. Qualifications Requires a high school diploma.Must have at least One year of prior experience.Standing and walking 80% of the time.SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:Must have good communication skills and the ability to make the patient relaxed and comfortable.Must be able to perform heelsticks, fingersticks, and venipunctures on populations previously defined.Must have ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.Must have good organizational skills and be flexible to adjust schedule in accordance with the needs of the laboratory.Must have the ability to interpret laboratory requisitions.WORKING CONDITIONS:Busy laboratory environment.Exposure to odors, infectious materials and other hazardous substances.
