The Indiana Memorial Union (IMU) has been the heart of the Indiana University Bloomington campus for more than 100 years. Each year thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests enjoy the many amenities and opportunities the IMU has to offer.

IU Outdoor Adventures (IUOA) provides students with opportunities to participate in courses, adventure trips, workshops, and other meaningful outdoor activities in Bloomington and beyond. Additionally, the IUOA Gear Shop, located within Eigenmann Hall, offers a wide variety of outdoor gear available for purchase or rental.

Job Summary

Indiana University Outdoor Adventures (IUOA) Adventure Specialists are designed to assist customers with retail, rental, and equipment needs as well as maintenance, care and cleaning of the outdoor equipment and physical space.

Adventure Specialists are considered customer service staff and must commit to meeting customer needs in a timely manner. Adventure Specialists will gain experience in customer service, teamwork, leadership, problem solving, communication, and public relations.

• Builds and maintains rapport with the student population, faculty and staff.
• Serves IUOA customers with respect and dignity, and seek to meet and exceed their expectations.
• Uses the POS system for customer's purchases of retail items, gear rentals, bouldering wall passes, memberships, and adventure trip purchases.
• Assists student groups as they enhance their outdoor experience.
• Promotes and encourage collegiality.
• Assists with maintenance and upkeep of physical space.
• Works independently as well as to collaborate effectively with others.
• Responsible for care, inspection, maintenance, and acquisition of IUOA rental, trip, and course equipment.
• Creates and/or maintains detailed equipment and parts inventory. Assists in retail inventory counts.
• Provides customers with an orientation to the bouldering wall.
• Works cohesively with and provide effective feedback to other staff, and seek out both formal and informal training.
• Consistently uses shared employee communication devices such as log books, forms, Outlook, and calendars.
• Maintains an inviting Outdoor Adventure space appearance, including restocking display cases, cleaning rental and retail areas, boat room, tent room, food room, bouldering room, and contributing to an admirable overall level of organization.
• Organizes and attends mandatory monthly Adventure Specialist staff meetings in cooperation with full-time staff.
• Answers the telephone and take messages as needed.
• Regularly responds to the IUOA e-mail.
• Sets aside equipment for adventure trips, custom experiences, and O-1 series courses.
• Other tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required

• Currently enrolled as a student at Indiana University.

SKILLS

Required

• Ability to communicate effectively and interact with Outdoor Adventures trip leaders.
• Thorough knowledge of use, care, and maintenance of rental equipment.
• Basic knowledge, understanding, and use of retail items.

Preferred

• Knowledge of equipment and retail items in outdoor adventure programming.
