SUMMARY

The Lead Mechanical Design Engineer position is a key member of Portescap's US R&D team which specializes in slotted Brushless DC motor product development. The primary responsibility for this role is the design of custom miniature motor systems used in high performance surgical hand tools and surgical robotics systems, as well as in aerospace and other industrial applications. Additional responsibilities include sustaining engineering support for our customers and innovation to enable technology breakthroughs that extend our ability to serve our customer's unmet needs. The R&D team is an essential component of Portescap's growth strategy, requiring creative, effective, and flexible candidates able to succeed in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and development of new and advanced miniature motor drive systems from concept to production in a cross functional engineering and manufacturing environment
  • Work closely with Customers and the Commercial Team to gather design inputs from various sources and translate that input into engineering requirements
  • Work closely with the New Product Development and Manufacturing teams to ensure manufacturability of new designs
  • Develop & integrate new technology that extends the performance and capabilities of our products
  • Support internal and external customer change requests and sustaining engineering needs
  • Participate in the innovation process and lead the development of new processes and designs

Critical Competencies
  • Understanding of electromechanical test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, dynamometers)
  • Understanding of various manufacturing equipment and processes (laser welding, transfer molding, lathe machine, milling machine, CNC)
  • Understanding of inspection and measurement tools (CMM, Caliper, Micrometer, Gages)
  • Understanding of quality systems and other process improvement tools
  • Self-motivated and prioritizes well; is capable of developing and driving clear and concise action plans to meet project timelines and deliverables
  • Comfortable working alone and with others in a manufacturing environment
  • Encourages and rewards thoughtful risk taking; demonstrated ability to anticipate and articulate risks
  • Effective problem solver including the ability to perform root cause analysis


Job Requirements
Education and Experience Requirements

  • S. in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent; graduate degree preferred
  • At least 6 years of engineering work experience; at least 10 years preferred
  • Experience designing and modeling high precision mechanical assemblies and dynamic mechanisms (e.g., gearing, ball bearings) is required
  • Demonstrated ability to use data & designed experiments to make decisions & solve problems
  • Experience with Solid Works or similar 3D modeling software is required
  • Experience in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is required
  • Experience with project or program management is preferred
  • Experience with reliability and failure analysis is a plus
  • Experience with design for manufacturability is a plus
  • Experience with polymer selection and molded component development is a plus
  • Experience with Oracle or similar ERP software is a plus
