The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denver's physical resources to provide a healthy and safe educational environment for the campus community through services of the departments of Capital Projects and Planning, Facilities Management, Parking & Mobility Services, Auxiliaries & Real Estate, and Business & Operations.

Position Summary

This is the highest skilled level position in the plumbing trade area. This position works with little or no supervision on all work assigned. In their absence, this position will fill in for the Plumbing Foreman and oversee the work of journeymen plumbers and lesser skilled workers.

Essential Functions

In addition to following the University of Denver's policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Works on plumbing systems and ensures that all work is accomplished in compliance with DU guidelines, plumbing codes, regulatory agencies compliance requirements and policies, and project plans and specifications.
  • Provides instruction, leadership, supervision, and inspections and participates in the work of lesser-skilled workers in the plumbing and other systems.
  • Meets with outside contractors for DU projects.
  • Acts as plumbing shop foreman in their absence.
  • Makes cost and time estimates on repair work and proposed new installations.
  • Reads and interprets complex drawings/plans and other detailed diagrams of plumbing, heating systems, and equipment as required for design reviews and installations.
  • Advises Plumbing Shop Foreman and administrative staff on matters about plumbing systems and projects.
  • Drives to campus sites with tools and equipment.
  • Installs and /or replaces the following: ceiling tile, suspended ceilings, floor tile, ceramic tile, steel.
  • Operates power equipment that includes power saws, sanders, drill presses, and other equipment as Drives to sites with tools and equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to read and interpret documents such as material safety data sheets, operating manuals, and work orders.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with University customers (students, staff, faculty, and visitors)
  • Basic math skills required when measuring and performing take-offs for miscellaneous jobs.
  • Detailed procedures. Daily priorities are established by the employee. The employee responds to situations requiring immediate attention.
  • Expert skills. Competency in plumbing fields/functions. Ability to read, interpret, and work from complex blueprints, rough sketches, and drawings.
  • Knowledge of standardized work routines and the ability to follow and give oral/written instructions involving several steps.
  • Knowledge of all types of plumbing equipment.
  • Must be knowledgeable of related OSHA and EPA regulations and able to effectively communicate rules to others.
  • Understanding standard tools, materials, methods, and practices of a wide variety within the plumbing trade.
  • Comprehension of construction, maintenance principles, practical plumbing, and plumbing codes.
  • Knowledgeable with Microsoft software applications.
Required Qualifications
  • A high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Necessary experience required to be licensed as a Master Plumber.
  • Licensed by the State of Colorado as a Master Plumber
  • Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License and be insurable under University guidelines.
  • Must be knowledgeable of related OSHA, EPA, ADA, IBC, and IPC regulations and effectively communicate rules to others.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical exam, and lift 100 lbs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Backflow certification
  • Confined space entry qualified.
  • Familiar working with CMMS software, including WebTMA or similar work order systems.
Working Environment
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts; in high, precarious places, confined spaces, trenches and ditches, and outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, dusty conditions, extreme heat, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
  • Unexpected interruptions often occur, and stress level is moderate to high.
Physical Activities
  • Moderate to strenuous effort required. This position requires extended standing, walking, climbing, bending, crouching, working at heights from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, and repetitive hand/wrist and elbow/shoulder motions. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. The employee is occasionally required to climb and balance and talk and hear.
  • Workers must also have the ability to work in confined, noisy, hot, and cold spaces and work with hand tools and shop equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Hourly Range:

The hourly range for the position is $31.39.
