Reporting directly to the Supervisor in Breast Imaging, and ultimately to the Breast Imaging Program Manager, the Mammography/Bone Densitometry Technologist maintain certification mammography and and performs breast imaging exams, procedures.. The employee works in assigned areas at a technical level not requiring constant supervision. Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment, with ingenuity and initiative to apply ionizing radiation for breast imaging diagnosis. Assumes responsibility for designated areas or procedures as required

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Performs mammographic imaging on patients presenting for screening and/or diagnostic service, according to department protocol. Exams include screening and diagnostic mammograms with or without tomosynthesis, wire localizations, ductograms, cyst aspiration, and core biopsies including stereotactic and ultrasound guided procedures. Assists radiologists with breast ultrasound exams.

2. Calculates and selects proper technical factors; operates equipment as required;; properly identifies images by verify patient demographics; appropriately annotates images with lead markers denoting laterality; acquires images that meet department quality standards.

3. Ensures all images are transmitted to PACS system, and exams are completed in hospital electronic medical record. Maintains working knowledge and performs accurate data entry into hospital and department electronic medical record.

4. Provides education to patients regarding exam. Provides radiation protection to patients in accordance with ALARA principles and department policy.

5. Assists physicians in performance of invasive procedures: prepares medications such as local anesthetics and/or contrast media. Ensures supplies are available for procedure. Practices sterile technique in setting up trays and performing procedures. Labels tissue samples appropriately. Performs first aid when necessary.

6. Instructs, advises and assists Radiologic Technology students in performing mammographic exams.

7. Performs duties such as transporting, transferring, immobilizing and positioning patients

8. Assists in research and Quality Improvement projects.

9. Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of assigned areas.

10. Rotates within department as required; cooperates with all personnel, promoting harmony within department.

11. Explains exam to patient taking into consideration physical and emotional needs; maintaining ethical standards (patient confidentiality, professional conduct, etc...)

12. Attends staff meetings, in-services, and maintains appropriate CEU's in accordance with Massachusetts State licensure and A.R.R.T. requirements.

13. Orients new technologists to mammographic procedures and department policies.

14. Notifies appropriate personnel of equipment malfunctions and repairs needed.

15. Stocks supplies in designated areas. Stocks and maintains adequate supplies and liens in assigned area.

16. Uses independent judgment, ingenuity and initiative under pressure in a variety of situations without constant supervision.

17. Performs other related duties as necessary

18. Performs quality control tests on equipment as needed to conform to all mammography regulations. Performs quality control tests on equipment as required by manufacturer.

Qualifications
• Must have graduated from an approved school of Radiologic Technology.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or REGISTRATIONS (if applicable):

• Must possess a valid Massachusetts license as a Radiologic Technologist in the category of Radiography.

• To perform mammography, the incumbent must possess a valid Massachusetts license in the category of mammography in addition to radiography.

• Must be registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

EXPERIENCE:

• 2-3 years experience as a radiologic technologist.

• Must be knowledgeable with quality control tests that need to be performed as well as MQSA, ARC and Mass State mammography regulations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Works in a large open area in Mammography which is noisy and tends to have extreme temperature and humidity variations.

• Minimal exposure to ionizing radiation, when using proper safety procedures.

• Continuous standing and lifting.

• Exposure to human waste and disease.
