Southern Star is currently seeking highly motivated and energetic students to join our team as Electrical Engineering Interns. Interns are exposed to a variety of project-based assignments which allow them to add value to the Company.

This position offers a variety of opportunities including basic engineering tasks related to design, analysis, test, and systems engineering. Activities can include but are not limited to data analysis, analysis methodology improvement projects, processing cause and corrective actions for non-conformances and maintain production work instructions.

Interns will typically support one or more experienced engineers in the performance of assignments, spend time shadowing actual operations, and have unique assignments that support larger projects as well as experience the day-to-day workings of engineering. They may perform and/or participate in additional activities/events which help them build a strong network within the Southern Star community and with fellow interns.

A taxable housing stipend may be provided to obtain housing near the Southern Star work location if the successful candidate's permanent home address and current college address is determined by Southern Star to be greater than reasonable driving distance from the assigned work location.

This is a paid summer internship. Summer internships are 12-weeks in length and start no earlier than May 2022, and end no later than August 2022.

Responsibilities

Intern Training Curriculum :

Compressor Design

  • Learn compressor design to include the sizing of natural gas compressors gaining the basic understanding of how to design around operating conditions and the consequences associated; understanding the basic operation of a typical compressor station understanding why all equipment is necessary; and understanding the operation of dehydration and storage facilities.

Pipeline Design
  • Learn high-level information on piping thickness and grade decision making; construction workspace decision-making; live-line welding; and Hydrotesting and reviewing the process.
  • Learn high-level design specifics to include: Mainline valve assembly; launcher and receiver; HDD plan and profile design for creek and river crossings; and road crossings for permitting and class design restrictions.

Measurement and Regulation
  • Learn high-level fundamentals, sizing and selection of natural gas measurement devices, regulation valves, flow control valves, pressure relief valves, and gas quality,
  • Learn high-level design and fabrication of meter and regulation skids to include and understand the federal regulations (Federal, State, Company Standards, others), safety, constructability and ease of maintenance.

Technical Toolbox
  • Purging Calculations
  • Line Packing Calculations
  • Wheel Load Analysis
  • Basic pipe sizing and hydraulic calculations

Automation Design
  • Introduce PIDs, CWPs and Area of Classifications along with Electrical drawing packages
  • Review Station and Unit Scada Monitoring in Wonderware
  • Introduce PLCs what they are and how we utilize them
  • Demonstrate Panel check outs and commissioning as time is allowed
  • Introduce Point to Point verifications with an overall understanding of Gas Control

Field visits to construction sites and fabrication shops as feasible.

Qualifications

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum:
  • You must be 18 years of age by the start of the summer internship assignment and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.75 after each completed semester/term.
  • You must be a US Citizen or US Person
  • You must be a Junior or Senior level status as of the semester starting August 2020 and must be currently pursuing a Bachelors' degree in Electrical Engineering
