Global Communities is seeking a paid Intern, Content Development to join the Communications team at the headquarters in downtown Silver Spring, Maryland. The Communications team is responsible for effectively telling the Global Communities story to target audiences across platforms with compelling, creative content creation and distribution. We manage the organization's brand, including visual identity and graphic design, editorial content, social media engagement and website development. We lead public relations efforts, including media outreach, stakeholder advocacy and crisis communications, develop marketing collateral and support effective internal communications.

The Intern, Content Development will work with the Communications team to create compelling content that tells the story of Global Communities' work and success. Tasks include researching, writing, editing, and interviewing staff and program participants. While this internship is primarily focused on editorial content, there are opportunities for supporting the digital team with multimedia products such as photo and/or video and designing products such as infographics and/or branded materials.
The intern will use their research and writing skills in a professional setting and will gain substantive knowledge on subjects related to international development, humanitarian assistance, gender, and financial inclusion.

This is a paid internship with flexibility to work part-time or full-time for approximately ten weeks. This position is eligible for a hybrid or fully remote work arrangement.

Responsibilities

  • Attend weekly department staff meetings and editorial meetings, taking meeting notes and pitching story ideas.
  • Draft blog posts and assist in outreach and communication efforts to partners, funders, implementers, and other Global Communities key audiences.
  • Attend bi-monthly meetings of the Communications Community of Practice group and help support meeting organization, agenda, and presentations.
  • Proofread, edit, or polish communications materials submitted by global colleagues.
  • Support tracking and analyzing metrics and data to better understand the reach and performance of specific content elements.
  • Contribute to the creation of publishable, public-facing content across media. Propose, assist, or execute the development of communications tools such as fact sheets, one pagers, success stories, videos, photo essays, infographics and more, including social media content, thought leadership pieces, and blog posts.
  • Collaborate with team on new ideas, directions, and tools to enhance communications strategies.
  • Help coordinate special communications projects such as script writing for special videos or assistance in planning thought leadership events.
  • Promote a culture of excellence, inclusion, learning, support, diversity, and innovation.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated research, writing, editing, and communication skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop blog posts, communication materials, briefs, or other non-academic content (written and/or audiovisual).
  • Fluency in English. Ability in Spanish, French or Arabic a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with others in a wide range of cultural and institutional contexts.
  • Motivation, strong work ethic, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines with limited supervision.


Qualifications
  • Active undergraduate student in their third or final academic year of study; or a graduate student in International Relations/Affairs, Communications, English, Journalism, or related discipline preferred.
  • Requires basic knowledge of Communications.
  • Cover Letter, Writing Sample and Resume required with application.
  • Must have U.S. Work Authorization.
