Position Title: Intern - HSI STEM-Information Technology Technician (Multiple Opportunities) (Temporary, Part-Time, up to 19.5 hours a week)

Department: East Campus Student Affairs / HSI STEM IT Knowledge & Context Grant

Rate of Pay: $19.03/ hour

Position Summary:

Are you a current IT/Cybersecurity student seeking hands-on experience in networking, system administration, and/or cybersecurity while also contributing to Pima Community College's culture of inclusion and excellence? The Pima Community College East Campus Center of Excellence in IT/Cybersecurity HSI STEM IT Knowledge & Context team is now recruiting HSI STEM Interns (Information Technology Technicians). HSI STEM Interns (Information Technology Technicians) have the unique opportunity to work in an operational capacity at our Pima Community College East Campus Center of Excellence to support the Center of Excellence through hands-on projects focused on network support and user support within our state-of-the-art Data Center and in the Cyber Warfare Range. HSI STEM Intern (Information Technology Technician) assignments support the overall operational and programmatic delivery of academic instruction and hands-on activities included in Pima Community College IT/Cybersecurity courses.

Program Summary:

The purpose of the HSI-STEM - IT Knowledge and Context Grant is to increase the number of Hispanic and low-income students attaining degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM); and to develop model transfer and articulation agreements between two-year HSIs and four-year institutions in such fields. The focus of this program is to attract more students and support them to persist and compete in the high-demand field of IT/Cybersecurity. It also improves the capacity of our IT meta-major to meet the high demand of employers in our region for IT and cybersecurity professionals. The grant provides for innovations in technology, teaching strategies, and student outreach. HSI STEM Interns (Information Technology Technicians) will work closely with the Grant Program Manager, Academic Director, and campus administration to meet the goals and objectives of the grant, and to meet the needs of students in the target areas and populations.

NOTES: This position is contingent upon continued funding through designated external sources. This grant is set to expire on 09/30/2026.

The schedule for this position is flexible and may include working evenings and weekends.

Start dates available in Summer Semester 2023 and Fall Semester 2023.


Duties and Responsibilities: Interns may be assigned to one of three areas of support based on programmatic and operational needs: General Center of Excellence Support, Network Support, User Support.

Interns assigned to CoE Support:

  • Engage in hands-on learning and educational development through completion of assigned projects that provide project management responsibility in the production development or maintenance of specific projects in the Center of Excellence (IT/Cyber)
  • Assist HSI STEM Data Center Specialists in welcoming and supporting new and returning students, tracking and assigning projects and computing resources
  • Provide response and resolution when needed for assigned projects
  • Create and maintain documentation and project updates for assigned projects and follow Center of Excellence (IT/Cyber) protocols for student welcoming, tracking, and assignment of resources
Interns assigned to Network Support, within the scope of assigned projects:
  • Install, set-up, program, test, and maintain Center of Excellence (IT/Cyber) data center network equipment
  • Provide technical assistance and instruction on the use of data center network equipment
  • Document and maintain record of data center network projects
  • Respond to and resolve problems associated with data network equipment
Interns assigned to User Support, within the scope of assigned projects:
  • Install, test, document, operate, maintain, and integrate virtual machines and hardware in a networked environment
  • Participate in the design and development of user experience specifications and standards
  • Maintain, distribute, and document any software licensing and/or vendor maintenance agreements
  • Train end-users on the use of hardware and software within the data center and/or cyber warfare range
  • Provides technical assistance to end users
Job Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree or current PCC IBEST student enrolled in CIS program and
  • Evidence of success in CIS (IT/Cybersecurity) academics and
  • Two years of computer technical experience
Or
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Degree or current PCC IBEST student enrolled in CIS program and
  • One year of technical experience and
  • Certification in areas of IT such as:
    • Cyber security
    • Enterprise data storage
    • Project management
    • Cloud computing
    • Analytics and data management
    • Application development
    • Architecture methodologies
    • IT service management
    • networking and wireless
Or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above

  • Troubleshooting and repairing computer or network hardware, software, and peripheral problems

  • Installing computer or network hardware, software, and peripherals

Depending upon the area of assignment:
  • Basic programming
  • Computer or network back-up and restoration principles
  • Basic computer system or data network administration principles
Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, manual dexterity, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts and electrical currents.
