Summary:

The HIM Tech Senior will be responsible for the following:

  • Oversees chart completion, tracking incomplete and delinquent medical records.
  • Will serve clinicians with notices of delinquent records and will coordinate letters of suspension and reinstatement with the Medical Staff Office.
  • Analyzes records for completeness and electronically assigns deficiency tags to clinicians in the EMR.
  • Will have basic understanding of federal, state and organizational regulations/policy that relate to the release of medical record information.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality in all matters pertaining to patients of CHRISTUS Good Shepherd Health System.
  • Ensures all records for the day's discharges or visit for day being analyzed are accounted for and follows-up with the respective departments if not received.
  • Registers newborn babies into appropriate reporting systems and submits data to the state.
  • Strives for 98% quality and completeness to ensure regulatory and organizational requirements are met.
OTHER MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Analyzes and interprets medical record documentation to determine complete and accurate charge information.
  • Determines acuity class, injection/infusion charges, procedure charge with CPT codes and any other charges as appropriate.
  • Works collaboratively with Revenue Cycle and other departments to answer questions and ensure edits are processed accurately and as timely as possible.
  • Ability to train staff on daily functions.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task.
  • Maintains confidentiality and discretion regarding all work matters and works cooperatively with all team members.
  • Performs all duties in a manner that protects the confidentiality of patients and does not solicit or disclose any confidential information unless it is necessary in the performance of assigned job duties.
  • Demonstrates competence to perform assigned responsibilities in a manner that meets the population-specific and developmental needs of the members served by the department.
  • Takes personal responsibility to ensure compliance with all policies, procedures and standards as promulgated by state and federal agencies, the hospital, and other regulatory entities.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service skills with medical staff, patients, and other departments.
  • Demonstrates excellent phone etiquette.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Meets or exceeds minimum performance standards for production and quality.
Requirements:
  • Proficient knowledge of Medical Terminology
  • Basic coding knowledge preferred
  • Acute Care Hospital and Clinic Medical Record experience preferred.
  • Two years of Hospital HIM Department experience can be considered in lieu of certification.
  • Completion of HIM/Coding certificate program with a minimum of a CCA credential (RHIA, RHIT, CCS also appropriate) AND/OR relevant HIM experience as could be acquired through at least 2 years work experience in an acute care HIM department.
