Description

Salary Range:

Salary will commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Job Summary:

Monitor direct charges to Grants & Contracts, auditing and processing expenditures in the time frame needed to
keep project accounts current and payments made timely. Communicate requirements and procedures to researchers and assistants per OMB Uniform Guidance, Sponsors' regulations and SMU Policy and Procedures. Ensure all required documentation is received for grant related expenditures. Provide a high level of customer service and training as needed.
Essential Functions:

  • Review requests for expenditures from Sponsored Projects to ensure that they are allowable and allocable in accordance with SMU policy, Federal or other sponsor's regulations, the terms and conditions of each grant or contract and the project budget. Verify accuracy of preparation of payroll authorization forms, purchase requisitions, payment requests, invoices, travel reports andjournal entries. Make revisions to forms submitted as necessary to conform to generally accepted accounting principles and SMU procedures. Report inconsistencies and recommend changes to policy or procedures to clarify and/or avoid non-compliance and disallowances which could result in loss of revenues to SMU.
  • Provide a high level of customer service. Collaborate with researchers , financial officers or representative on budget change needs, allowable and allocable charges and alternative approaches to funding expenditure needs. Follow-up with them near end of project for items that appear to be missing from expenditures compared with budgeted expectations. Provide training as needed.
  • Generate journal entries for labor corrections requested and approved.
  • Review new award set ups and modifications for factors affecting expense approvals. Make note of limitations/requirements imposed by agreements.


Qualifications

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree is required for this position, preferably in accounting. Three years of business and/or accounting experience is required.

Computer literacy in MS Office (Excel, Word, and Outlook) and Windows is required. Peoplesoft accounting experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

The ideal candidate must demonstrate strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills across a wide range of constituencies. A strong customer service orientation is essential. Must be self starters with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and within a team environment. Must also possess strong problem solving skills, with the ability to be resourceful, proactive, and seek assistance as needed.

Candidate with strong organizational and planning skills is requred. Attention to detail is a must.

Physical/Environmental Demands:

This position requires the ability to sit for long periods of time.
