Job Title: Electrical Designer

Reports to: Director of Engineering and Design Services

Location: Des Moines, IA

FLSA Status: Full-Time / Exempt

Position Description. The Electrical Designer Technician is a critical role for Baker Electric, Inc., a subsidiary of publicly traded EMCOR Group, Inc., and is located in Des Moines, IA. The position will partner with Project Managers to develop specifications and schematic drawings and instructions for installation of lighting, power distribution, control, low voltage and related electrical equipment used for various projects throughout the lines of business at Baker Electric.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Perform electrical design and detailing using REVIT and AutoCAD within Baker Electric's design department
  • Complete electrical, power and lighting calculations using electrical design software
  • Work with other design team members to create engineered drawings for all types of electrical projects
  • Review shop drawings, product data and details associated with the electrical design
  • Validate code applications including, but not limited to, National Electrical Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), Life Safety Code (NFPA 101) and International Energy Conservation Code (IECC)
  • Partner with cross-functional team to draft working drawings, wiring diagrams and specifications, as required for instructions to field personnel and for resolution with other trades
  • Assemble documentation packages and produce drawing sets to be checked by cross-functional project team and project manager
  • Confer with cross functional team to resolve problems
  • Travel to various project sites to resolve issues or develop a deeper understanding of the project and any issues at the point of installation
  • Maintain confidentiality of work and any Baker Electric project knowledge
  • Escalate critical and/or sensitive issues to Project Manager(s) or Company leadership with recommendation for resolution
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Preferred Education and Experience (Knowledge)
  • Minimum 1 - 5 years related experience in electrical industry
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Construction Engineering (Electrical Emphasis), or a similar area of study
  • Knowledge of lighting design, control systems, power distribution and life safety systems
  • Knowledge of the electrical construction industry, contract documentation and the National Electrical Code
  • Working knowledge of federal, state and city regulations and guidelines
  • Experience performing electrical/construction/engineering calculations
  • Experience in Autodesk software including Revit, AutoCAD MEP, Navisworks
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite

Physical Requirements (Ability)

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to work at a computer (reading and keying) for extended periods of time, to talk and hear, to move within the office, to retrieve files and to meet with employees in their offices or conference room, communicating verbally and in writing, one on one, in small groups, presenting work. The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

The employee will frequently be required to commute to field locations and project sites to accurately design electrical layouts. The employee must have the ability to navigate around the job site locations.

Work from home is not an option for this position. All work will be between office and onsite. While visiting field locations, the employee may be required to work outdoors, be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical and electrical parts; high, precarious places; dust, fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions, extended exposure to sunlight; cold and heat; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.
