Job Description

General Motors Propulsion Systems Research Lab is located in Warren, Michigan, and we are seeking a highly motivated and creative researcher with deep knowledge and experience in electric machines to join our Research team in the Electric Machines and Drive Systems Group. You will perform research and development of advanced electric machine components and systems for use in electric and autonomous vehicles. Interested? Apply today!

What You Do

  • Architect and develop future electric machine drive topologies
  • Conduct research in high power density, highly integrated, multifunctional electric machine systems
  • Provide design solutions and analysis for future products
  • Develop simulation tools and models for rapid prototyping and validation of design concepts
  • Conduct experimental testing and evaluation of new concepts
  • Document work in research reports, external publications, and records of invention
  • Interact closely with divisional staffs and development partners to meet project objectives
  • Participate in technical discussions and reviews as a technical specialist
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry and technical developments affecting areas of responsibility

Additional Job Description

What You Need
  • Advanced Degree in Electronic/Electrical Engineering (or related science or technology degree)
  • Theoretical and hands-on experience in electric machine design
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic and machine theory/topologies
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of finite element tools for machine design and optimization
  • Experience with high voltage electrical systems for electric drives
  • Electric vehicles and adjacent applications (e.g. aerospace, commercial vehicles, etc.) experience
  • Good understanding of current harmonics, materials, and their impact on machine losses
  • Solid understanding of the theory and application of magnetics (inductors, transformers) and capacitors (electrolytic, film and ceramic) used for power conversion
  • Theoretical knowledge of controls relevant to power electronics
  • Proficiency with basic EE tools (oscilloscopes, network analyzers, signal generators etc.)

What Would Be Even Better
  • Ph.D. with focus in Electronic/Electrical Engineering
  • Postdoc or direct Industry experience
