The Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington (SPH-B) invites applications for the position of Director of Marketing and Communications. This is an exciting time of growth for our school, and we seek an individual who will coordinate and lead our marketing, communications, web services, and possibly event management areas.

Located on the flagship campus of the Indiana University system, SPH-B has more than 2600 enrolled undergraduate and 380 graduate students, 200 faculty, and 95 staff in five departments (Applied Health Science, Environmental and Occupational Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Health & Wellness Design, and Kinesiology). Indiana University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU). The city of Bloomington offers the feel of a college town with the amenities of a large city. Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities

  • Oversees and supports the work of several individuals (including graphic designer, marketing specialist, writers, web staff, and events and ceremonies staff) on our Marketing and Communications Team; works closely with the Dean and other school leaders on a variety of events, speaker's series, and recruitment efforts; as well as participates on and/or leads special projects.
  • Directs day-to-day operations by providing oversight and direction for the Marketing and Communications Team.
  • Manages relationships with internal and external stakeholders for communications/marketing needs, projects, and programs to align with SPH-B objectives and goals.
  • Works in collaboration with the Dean, Marketing and Communications Team, and other school leaders to develop appropriate marketing materials delivered through print, email, and digital channels to support SPH-B objectives and goals.
  • Spearheads review of drafts of marketing and communications content and coaches on flawless prose, tone, branding guidelines, formatting, and other elements that may affect perception, message, or reputation.
  • Assists in budget planning and administration for communications/marketing initiatives, including expenditures and program costs.
  • Guides process, operational, and strategic recommendations through monitoring trends, best practices, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and individual creativity.
General Responsibilities
  • Directs operations for the marketing and communications function by providing oversight and direction within a department, large multi-faceted department, or multiple departments.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, coaches, assigns work, sets goals and objectives, determines staffing needs, and directs the work of a team of Communications Generalists and/or Communications Assistants.
  • Manages relationships with various internal and external stakeholders; determines communications needs, projects, and programs to align with objectives and goals and manages processes such as the development of communications timelines related to such initiatives.
  • Reviews drafts of communications and projects and coaches on grammar, tone, branding guidelines, formatting, and other elements that may affect the perception of messaging or reputation of the department.
  • Responds to escalated and complex inquiries and requests and explains policies, procedures, and context of communications.
  • Assists in budget planning and administration for communications initiatives, including expenditures, revenue projections, and program costs.
  • Monitors industry trends and best practices, makes process and operational and strategic recommendations to manager, and assists in implementing recommendations to optimize operations and progress toward objectives.
  • May provide guidance to lower-level Communications Leaders.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, public relations, or related field
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree and 8 years of management experience (higher education preferred)
  • Master's degree and 4 years of management experience (higher education preferred)
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 4 years in relevant field
  • 1 year of management experience in relevant field

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
