The Core Network Engineer IV functions as a senior level leader and provides oversight to the networking team in support of WOW!'s voice, video, and data products through technical leadership and consulting across the organization. This role will develop and maintain the high-level design/strategy plan for the overall logical and technical architecture for Metro, Access, and Backbone networks.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to those listed below:

  • Generates conceptual, logical, and physical network architectures, documents, testing analyses, test plans and risk assessments to ensure sound architecture that aligns with company's long term strategy.
  • Provides technical leadership to engineering team to accomplish research, analyze and design network architecture to meet company requirements
  • Research and analyze the most complex data, voice, and video network and hardware problems and provide recommendations for solution
  • Develop and maintain a road map for capabilities, operations and technologies
  • Determine methods and procedures to be implemented and used on complex new technologies to enhance performance.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to increase backbone network reliability and reduce costs
  • Research technological advancements to ensure that voice, data, and video networking solutions are continuously improved, supported, and aligned with industry and company standards
  • Participate in evaluating complex data, voice, or video networking technologies to understand their potential and recommends future direction
  • Evaluate cost analyses and vendor comparisons for large-scale projects to ensure cost-effective and efficient operations, and measures feasibility of various approaches
  • Assists in creating department budget
  • Revise model and budgetary guidelines as appropriate and in conjunction with engineering leadership to ensure company and client needs are met
  • Recommend complex investment decisions to management and internal customers based on results of independent assessment of current and future data network performance, stability, and network management issues
  • Identify, adjust and implement changes to investment based upon changing business needs
  • Work with other engineering teams to ensure detailed designs are deployable, and able to be operated with minimal impacts to customers, and operating expenses
  • Work with vendor partners to ensure engineering requirements are aligned with product roadmaps
  • Act as a mentor and provide oversight to junior network engineering staff and implementation engineering.
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field
Experience/Skills Needed:
  • 6+ years' experience in ISP environment
  • 8-10 years' experience in network architectures
  • Expert routing knowledge (OSPF, IS-IS, BGP, MPLS, RSVP and multicast) required
  • Extensive network engineering and architecture experience - excellent understanding of Internet and datacenter topologies
  • Experience evaluating, configuring, and troubleshooting a variety of network equipment especially Juniper, Nokia (Alcatel-Lucent), and Cisco - solid understanding of associated vendor hardware architecture and characteristics
  • Thorough understanding of various L2/L3 protocols and technologies: TCP/IP (v4 & v6) and related protocols, multicast, MPLS-based services, QOS, BFD, LACP, VRRP, STP, etc
  • Understanding of Layer 4-7 switching/load balancing and application integration
  • Solid understanding of network based security protocols and methods (eg IPSec, SSL, TLS, ACLs)
  • Able to investigate new technologies, develop scalable network solutions, and create successful business cases to propose new configurations, architectures, services, and policies
  • Analytical approach to problem solving and usage of methodical & documented processes to propose network enhancements
  • Experience in a 24/7 Internet facing production environment and ensuring customer requirements are effectively anticipated and met according to scope, criticality, and severity level
  • Must be able to perform basic mathematical functions/calculations
Computer Skills:
  • G Suite experience preferred
