Under the general direction of the Chair of the Department of Surgery and in compliance with the Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff, the Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery will be responsible for the administrative activities of the Division, including the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of clinical, educational and academic programs, and ensuring Pediatric Surgery coverage at all times.

Administrative

The Chief of Pediatric Surgery:

  • Provides clinical guidance, as appropriate, to all physicians within the Division. Assists hospital administration in evaluating the performance of non-physician managerial, technical and nursing staff assigned to the Division as required from time to time. Provides strategic guidance to the Chair of Surgery, Chair of Orthopedics and Chair of Pediatrics regarding all surgical care in children


  • Evaluates and makes recommendations to the Chair, Department of Surgery regarding the clinical privileges to be exercised within the Division by current and potential members of the medical staff during their appointment or reappointment process.

  • Fosters a collaborative relationship with nursing and other operating room staff members involved in the care of Pediatric Surgery patients in order to provide for effective and efficient surgical services.


  • Conducts ongoing evaluations of the clinical work performed in the Division through a quality improvement program. Counsels and provides guidance to members of the Division regarding performance improvement goals and objectives. Identifies cases requiring peer review and participates in the peer review process.


  • Develops and presents to the Chair of the Department of Surgery an annual divisional plan.


  • As required, assists in preparing the divisional budget and monitoring fiscal activities of the division.


  • Participates in other administrative activities of the Department, such as performance improvement programs, practice guideline development and implementation, utilization review, risk management, safety programs, medical records documentation review and education with regard to accuracy/completeness, regulatory affairs, additional programs as required, and house officer recruitment, and serves on departmental committees, such as resident selection.


  • Assures continuous pediatric surgery coverage of the Emergency Department and the Hospital.

  • Develops strategies to optimize clinical practice and program development for the Division while assisting in the design of cost-effective approaches to high quality care.


  • Establish relationship with the Acute Care Surgery, Anesthesia, Orthopedics, Pediatrics, Neonatology and Emergency Medicine in collaboration with the Chair of Surgery at NWH and Chief of Pediatric Surgery at MGH as necessary to develop patient care management protocols.


  • Participates from time to time in Mass General Brigham-wide activities.


  • Performs other administrative duties as may from time to time be reasonably requested by the Chair, Department of Surgery or by the Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs.


  • Participates in all diversity, equity and inclusion efforts of the department, hospital and Mass General Brigham and demonstrates a commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.


  • B. Direct Clinical Services

  • Is available to all clinical services as a consultant on pediatric surgical needs.


  • Maintains a call/coverage roster for Pediatric Surgery ensuring constant access for consultation.


  • Medical Education


  • The Chief of Pediatric Surgery:

  • Coordinates all formal educational activities regarding pediatric surgery.


  • Participates in the following on-going teaching activities: Educational conferences for residents and students, Morbidity and Mortality Conference, and Surgical Grand Rounds conferences with surgical students.


  • Revises and updates the education curriculum for both surgical students and residents on an as needed basis.


  • Performs other teaching activities as may from time to time be reasonably requested by the Chair, Department of Surgery.


  • Scholarly


  • The Chief of Pediatric Surgery:

  • As appropriate, develops, coordinates and participates in research programs, including clinical trials.


  • Assists surgical residents in the preparation of lectures, abstracts and manuscripts appropriate for publication in peer review journals.


  • Qualifications
    REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current board certification in Pediatric Surgery; at least 5 years of clinical experience in an academic setting
  • Eligible to be fully licensed/certified as a surgeon in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
  • Eligible for active privileges on the medical staffs of NWH and MGH
  • Eligible for Harvard medical school appointment
