Job Summary
The Associate Director of Accounting is responsible for the most complex areas of accounting. The individual will lead processes and projects in direct support of the CAO and Senior Director of Accounting and Accounting Policy. Additionally, the Associate Director of Accounting will lead projects impacting accounting managers and will provide support to the Directors in the accounting group. The Associate Director of Accounting will communicate on a cross functional basis, inside and outside of Finance, with senior management and must be able to communicate complex matters in a clear, concise manner while keeping the big picture in perspective. This position is required to have a strong understanding and application of technical accounting, controls, systems and processes. This position will oversee complicated projects that span multiple accounting areas and will be the primary resource in responding to the most complex accounting matters. This individual will be responsible for change management, implementing new products offered by the Bank, taking lead roles in integrating business combinations/acquisitions, will perform independent research and develop project plans to address all technical accounting, operational and reporting aspects across the accounting department. Additionally, this individual will be tasked with entity level control analysis related to financial results and analysis, evaluating the design of controls, assessing opportunities to reduce risk, cost and improve efficiency across the department.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Provides accounting information and recommendations to strategic plans and financial reviews ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Identifies trends and offers insight for consideration by the CAO and Senior Director of Accounting and Accounting Policy. Resolves non-routine accounting concerns for accounting managers and the accounting staff and other departments by researching and interpreting accounting policy, applying observations and recommendations to operational issues, and ensuring compliance with GAAP.
  • Confirms financial status by coordinating the collection, consolidation, and evaluation of financial data. Ensures an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year end close. Executes entity level controls to ensure the financial statements are complete and accurate through senior level analysis. Works within finance and other departments to compare results to budget and forecast and to work closely to improve budgeting and forecasting for both routine and ad hoc accounting matters.
  • Assess and identify the need for process improvements of both a manual and system nature. Oversees accounting projects that impact multiple areas of accounting, finance and the business. Ensures an appropriate team is assigned to the projects, overcomes challenges to the projects or escalates to the CAO and Senior Director of Accounting and Accounting Policy, reports regularly on project status and needs and delivers project results and will be the point person to ensure the correct application of accounting, reporting, design and operation of controls, integration of companies processes or systems, risk is appropriately reduced and communications on a cross-functional basis are occurring. This will include financial reporting, business combinations, new products, new lines of business, adoption of new accounting standards, new complex accounting structures related to the sale of assets, REITs, trusts, etc. and other complex matters which will involve collaboration with multiple aspects of the business.
  • Staff member is expected to consistently adhere to regulatory and compliance policies and standards linked to their job as listed. Staff member will not repeatedly act in a manner signifying intentional or willful noncompliance, nor exhibit gross negligence or a general disregard for compliance and regulatory standards. Staff member must ensure compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations. Staff member must complete all required compliance training on a timely basis. Staff member will maintain knowledge of and adhere to Flagstar's internal compliance policies and procedures. Staff member must take responsibility to keep up to date with changing regulations and policies.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance required.
  • Master's Degree in Accounting or Finance preferred.
  • CPA Preferred.
  • 7- 10 years of previous accounting experience.
  • 4 years of leadership experience.
  • 2 years of experience working on accounting projects.
  • Requires strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven ability to relay complicated information in a simple manner.
  • Previous project management experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines required.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles and practices.
  • Strong understanding of COSO.
