Assistant Teaching Professor, Honors College, University of Missouri-St. Louis.

The Honors College at the University of Missouri-St. Louis invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track, Assistant Teaching Professor in African-American studies with experience in rhetoric and writing instruction.

This position includes, as do all honors appointments, a significant service component focused on student support. Honors faculty teach three courses each semester in contrast with the standard four-course workload for UMSL non-tenure track faculty in order to facilitate these additional duties. These duties include academic advising, new student recruiting and participation in Honors community events, this faculty member's responsibilities will include serving as a mentor to our St. Louis Scholars/Opportunity Scholars program for first generation and underrepresented students from the greater St. Louis area.

The initial appointment will be for one academic year, with the possibility of ongoing renewal and the opportunity for advancement to Associate and Full Teaching Professor (on the non-tenure track). Appointments of up to three years are possible as the faculty member moves through academic ranks.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Terminal degree by the time of appointment in the candidate's discipline with specialization or concentration in African American Studies.
  • Demonstrated teaching effectiveness in composition and African American studies courses.
  • Evidence of potential to support the College's goal to be a leader in inclusive excellence, both on campus and nationally.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching small, discussion-based seminars, particularly in an honors program.
  • Evidence of innovative pedagogy, including interdisciplinary courses, service learning or community engagement.
  • Student advising and mentoring experience.
  • Experience coordinating or directing student programs.
  • Experience fostering a culture and climate of inclusive excellence.
