SUMMARY:

The Assistant Director for the Student Center for Equity and Inclusion provides oversight and leadership for all support and meaningful initiatives that directly impact the Black/African American student community at the University of Richmond. Through high impact and successful programs, the Assistant Director will aid in creating multiple avenues for community and skill building opportunities for students within the Black community and connect them to resources that will enhance their campus life experience. The Assistant Director will also facilitate ongoing programs for the overall multicultural student population in collaboration with the Assistant Director for Latinx Student Support and Associate Director for Multicultural Programs. The ideal candidate would have prior experience coordinating meaningful programs, initiatives, and resources that meet the needs of Black/African American young adults primarily in a college setting.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Program and Project Development

  • Develop, implement, and coordinate programs focusing upon self-identified Black and African American students.
  • Develop on-going strategies to promote campus-wide investment in recognizing and promoting behaviors, policies, practices, and initiatives that are in accordance with the University's goal of endorsing and supporting diversity, inclusion, and equity for all within its community.
  • Strategize multiple means to equip Black/African American students with skills that are designed to enhance resilience, self-awareness, confidence, and transformational leadership.
  • Strategize differing vehicles to acclimate Black/African American students into the campus community.
  • Develop strategies to garner added funding to support initiatives that enhance recruitment, retention, and student quality of life experiences.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to develop, stimulate, and implement initiatives that promote awareness, understanding, recognition, and celebration the Black/African American community.
  • Collaborate with other SCEI staff to plan events that promote the Center to the campus community and positively impact the student populations served.
  • Collaborate with the Multicultural Programs team (Associate & Assistant Directors) for the annual Multicultural Pre-Orientation transition program for first year students.
  • Serve as the club advisor for the Black Student Alliance.
  • Facilitate on-going Cultural Kickbacks geared toward gathering the multicultural community around food from different backgrounds.
  • Coordinate and provide logistical support for the men of color and Black women's affinity groups.
  • Serve as the primary liaison to continue on-going relationship with URBAN alumni chapter and bridge gap with current Black undergraduate students.
  • Design and implement programs that support and increase wellness and resilience, incorporating culturally affirming practices that acknowledge the challenges faced by Black/African American students.
  • Develop initiatives that foster a pluralistic learning environment and a sense of belonging for students, with emphasis on African American and Black students.
  • Provide academic, cultural, educational, and social programs and activities that support students of the Black and African diaspora.
  • Lead the "Interpoint" program that is geared at facilitating student led dialogue around tough topics centered in race and social justice matters.
  • Partner with the CSI staff to support the University's three NPHC organizations.

Administration and Management
  • Assist the Dean and Director in designing, implementing and facilitating goals and objectives for programs and initiatives that impact the Black/African American student communities.
  • Collaborate with the Director on budget planning and resource allocations for Black/African American student programs.
  • Participate in special projects that align with the mission of the SCEI at the request of the Dean and Director.
  • Manage and practice good stewardship of an annual budget for Black/African American student programs and initiatives.

Student Advising and Mentoring
  • Serve as a primary office source for ongoing counsel and advisement of Black and African American students.
  • Mentor Black and African American students in ways that promote personal development, social ease, and general satisfaction relative to their campus quality of life experiences.
  • Plan, develop, and implement community outreach opportunities for Black/African American students.
  • Facilitate opportunities for students to develop effective mentor relationships with staff and faculty.

Evaluation and Assessment
  • Generate evaluation reports and other information related to project(s) or program(s) for the Black student communities
  • Develop strategies to monitor, assess, and enhance the effectiveness of existing and new initiatives for these populations.
  • Assess student needs, priorities, and concerns.
  • Research and maintain up-to-date database for "Best Practices" for multicultural programming and initiatives that support the Black Student community.

Campus-Wide Committee and Outreach Efforts
  • Actively engage with other campus offices to create, identify and implement initiatives to enhance the "lived experience" of Black students.
  • Serve on institutional committees to develop, promote, and/or create University policies, practices, or regulations.
  • Teach a WELL 100 class created for the successful transition of first year students.
  • Serve as chair of the Black History Month committee providing leadership in the creation of events to celebrate the month.
  • Lead efforts to plan the Annual Black Excellence Gala

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Adept in establishing mentorship relations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Proven programming and events coordination specifically centering Black/African American students
  • Advanced computer and data management skills, utilizing programs such as Microsoft Office Applications, Adobe InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, and Social Media Applications.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree required, with a minimum of 2-3 years' work experience in Higher Education; preferred educational background in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel, Communication, Psychology, Counseling, Ethnic studies, or related background. Experience providing support for underrepresented students and a deep awareness in issues that specifically impact college-age Black and African American students globally. Basic awareness of LGBTQ, first-generation, Latinx, Asian, and limited-income student populations and an understanding of social justice issues that affect these communities. A great deal of experience creating programs geared towards enhancing the involvement of Black/African American young adults in a campus or community setting. Ability to create and facilitate trainings that may build awareness of the issues and lived experiences of Black and African American students to the campus community.

WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week; some weekend and evening hours

SALARY STRUCTURE:
Pay Grade 6 (Hiring Range $44,775.00 to $59,325.00 annually)
